More vendors announced for Saturday's Market (plus a recipe!)

Emma Dudley will have gorgeous plants in addition to vegetables and wonderful herbs, both well-known and unusual. Mrs. Dudley is a wonderful source of information about the history of the herbs and plants she carries, so ask away!
Clan Stewart get your fresh eggs, meat, pork and more. Terry Moist brings some of the best eggs you'll ever taste.
New Starts Farms Our dear friend Tom Baldwin will be back from New York State. He's bringing fall mums and herb plants to brighten your home.
Cheverly Breadbasket will have delicious breads, pastries, cookies and muffins and a very special treat: Grades A&B Maple Syrup from S&S Maple Camp in Western Maryland. Try Grade A this Sunday on French toast made with Firehook's French baguette, Clan Stewart's eggs, and topped with sliced fresh peaches from the market. Pure heaven. Some people prefer Grade B, which has a more pronounced maple flavor. Use it to sweeten bowl of oatmeal or use it to make a batch of Maple Gingerbread:
Maple Gingerbread 1/2 cup Grade B Maple Syrup
2 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ginger 1 teaspoon soda 2 eggs 1 cup sour cream
PREHEAT oven to 325 F. degrees.Combine and sift dry ingredients. Mix maple syrup with beaten eggs and add sour cream. Combine the mixture and bake in greased 8" x 8" pan for 20 to 30 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or favorite ice cream. Yield: About 8 to 10 servings.
See you Saturday at the Market!

Who's Coming to the Market this week?

In addition to our monthly plant clinics with Master Gardeners and terrific music from Charles & Kelly of the Hot Noodles, this week our vendors will have all sorts of wonderful treats for your early fall table...

Shlagel Farms Tomatoes (large and small...a new crop of yellow grapes just started), kale and collards, eggplant, green beans, ciders, apples, sweet potatoes, red potatoes, green peppers, red peppers, hot peppers (jalapeno, poblano, cubanelle, anaheim, italian long hots, and habanero), white sweet corn, watermelon, cantaloupes, mums , flats of pansies that will bloom until spring…”I'm probably forgetting something so come and see for yourself!”

From Ellen Shlagel: “Although having Farmer Russ trapped inside due to rain is like having a grumpy bear in the house, we really needed a little moisture, so I'm thankful for the rain this week. He will be anxious until all of the beds for strawberries are made and the plants are in the ground. Construction on the petting zoo is zooming ahead. It's a little further from the house this year so my walk with heavy milk bottles for the babies will be a longer one, but it will be worth it to have a permanent structure for them. “Speaking of animal babies, Shlagel Farms is going to be handing out flyers with coupons for a discount visit to the farm. We open the farm up in October for school trips during the week and family trips on the weekends. You can visit a working family farm and have a kid safe hay ride, a trip through the petting zoo and turn through the straw maze. Our focus group are ages 2-8, although older kids will appreciate the visit as well. As a family you can pick your own pumpkin and make your own scarecrow if you want. Just bring clothes and we'll have the straw and string. We'll have flyers for you at the market coming soon.”

Rebert Farm/Benny’s Fruit Stand yellow peaches, the following apples - gala, honey crisp, golden supreme, macintosh, early red delicious, ida red, and smokehouse. We will fill out the table with pears, two types of grapes (pink tokay and concord), wintersquash, gourds, and indian corn Martha’s Jams In addition to her regular (and very delicious) flavors, Martha has just finished a special HOT pepper jelly. Who's Coming to Market this week? Rebert's Farm/Benny's Fruit Stand

School is back in session and fall is in the air... And our vendors are bringing produce that celebrates the change of season! Matt Rebert writes that they'll have lots of apples (Honey Crisp, Gala, Golden Supreme, Macintosh, and Smokehouse), as well as a variety of winter squash, two types of plums, yellow and white peaches, bartlett pears, and purple onions. In addition to including fresh fruits in those sack lunches for school and work (and picnics), now is the time for pies, crisps and cobblers of all types. They're also a great addition to salads, sandwiches (try brie, basil and peaches on toast), inventive salsas (peach over fish is delicious), or even cooked with your favorite meats. And winter squashes and red onions are perfect for these cooler early fall evenings -- roasted, accompanying a salad...what a terrific, simple fall supper.

Who's at the Market this Saturday? Martha's Jams!

We're so glad to have Martha Allen back this weekend -- we've missed you, Martha, and we need to stock up on your delicious jams! Of course these jams are delicious on toast or in a classic pb&j, but why not try something new this week? Incorporate a tablespoon full in the dressing for your delicious autumn salad. Add a bit to the marinade for meat or poultry. Braise tofu with jam mixed with olive oil before baking it. And how about a classic sweet omelet or crepes filled with jam and sprinkled with powdered sugar? There are so many ways to use jams to expand your cooking repertoire -- get creative!

Who's coming to Market this week? Shlagel Farms!

Ellen Shlagel of Shlagel Farms keeps us updated on happenings at the farm and what they'll have for you at our special Labor Day weekend Market this Saturday:
We are very busy on the farm this week starting construction on our petting zoo for October Harvest Days on our farm and beginning the necessary preparation of the land to plant next seasons strawberries. All this with our usual three times a week grocery store deliveries and other Farmer's Markets keeps us outside from first to last light.
This Saturday, we'll have yellow seedless melons, eggplant, grape tomatoes, red seedless melons, green peppers, red peppers, old-fashioned sugar baby seeded melons, variety of hot peppers (wonderful for salsa), cantaloupes, green beans, tasty red tomatoes, low-acid yellow tomatoes, green tomatoes (for frying), roma tomatoes, kale, collards, small red potatoes, juicy peaches, a limited supply of raspberries, plenty of the tasty cider (that many of you are hooked on!), sweet white corn and baby cucumbers. We're watching the field closely for the ripening of our Sprite Melons. The taste is between a pear and a honey dew and they're crisp like an apple. They were a huge hit last year; both for taste and for their incredible nutritional value. Keep your fingers crossed! They'll be coming soon!If anyone would like a full 25 lb box of Roma tomatoes which are so tasty in sauce when the snow is flying, please send us an e-mail by Thursday evening so that we can pick them on Friday. They're $20.00 per box. Regular tomatoes are $15.00 per box. That should help you plan many tasty and nutritious menus for next week.
Enjoy!
