This week at the Market: Rebert Farm/Benny's Fruit Stand

At Cheverly Community Market, we're big fans of the Rebert brothers, and we know you are, too. They bring a great variety of our favorite fall fruits to Cheverly from their Pennsylvania farm, and they arrive before first light on Saturday mornings with a truck full of luscious, perfect fruit. That is dedication.
This week, visit Rebert Farm/Benny's Fruit Stand at Cheverly Community Market for absolutely delicious apples: Jonathan, Rome, Smokehouse, Ida Red, Cortland, Jona Gold, Mutsu, Ambrosia, Gala, Red & Golden Delicious, Empire, Fuji, Starks Delicious, Sweet Paradise and York varieties; as well as Bosc pears, fresh pressed cider, onions, and white potatoes.

Autumn favorites...at Cheverly Community Market!

This week at the Market: All in the Details Floral Design

Kira Baker of All in the Details Floral Design will have lovely fall arrangements, plus two sizes of cut flowers in bunches. The majority of these blossoms will be locally grown flowers, so it's a great opportunity to Keep It Local by supporting a Cheverly artist and enjoying the flora of Maryland!

It's not too late to order florals for Homecoming, or too early to order flowers for your fall celebrations! Make sure to stop by and visit Kira this Saturday to discuss the possibilities!

This week at the Market: Natural Nick's Produce

This Saturday at Cheverly Community Market, Natural Nick's Produce has Lorz Italian and Siberian Red Heirloom Garlic and delicious, garlicky Natural Nick's Tomato Basil Sauce. If the harvest timing is good, Natural Nick will also have Cherry Roma heirloom tomatoes and Pomodoro Rio Grande Tomatoes grown from Italian seed -- this variety is not available domestically, so this is a real treat. The fig harvest has been going so well this year, Natural Nick has collected enough to make a batch of Adriano Fig Conserve (yay!)
For your sweet tooth, Natural Nick will have Amaretti Angelina (Gluten Free) Natural Nick's Biscotti Antoinetta, Baklava Alexandra and Natural Nick's Fruit Conserves: Blueberry (which includes Wine Grape Raisins) Strawberry and Threeberry (Combination of Blackberry, Blueberry & Raspberry). All products are naturally grown and produced in the traditional organic method by Natural Nick's Produce As Nature Intended.

New Vendor: Port of Leonardtown Winery

Cheverly Community Market is thrilled to welcome a new winery to our ranks: Port of Leonardtown Winery. The winery, located in southern Maryland's Port of Leonardtown Park, is a cooperative effort between the Town of Leonardtown, St. Mary's County, and the Southern Maryland Wine Growers Cooperative. It is one of a few cooperative wineries in the United States and their wines reflect the spirit of their pioneering member growers and depth of character drawn from the deep roots of our vines.

Winemaker Patrick Isles was one of the founding members of the Southern Maryland Wine Growers Cooperative, which was established with the goal of producing world-class wines and operates the Port of Leonardtown Winery.  He is a third generation grape grower and winemaker. At an early age, Patrick was mesmerized by his grandfather’s stories of the vineyard and life on the farm, and fascinated by the bubbling vats of grape and red raspberry wine in his grandmother’s basement. Patrick took over the vineyard at Summerseat Farm in 2001 – rescuing and restoring the original untended and overgrown vineyard. The next year he began working with the University of Maryland’s grape researchers by installing a trial planting of various grape varieties at Summerseat, where he gathers and reports data on vine growth, grape harvest, and wine quality. The increased vineyard size took his home wine making hobby to a nearly 200 gallons per year wine making obsession. Patrick has brought his award-wining wine making skills with him to the Port of Leonardtown Winery where the wines he has produced have won 44 awards since production began three years ago.

Rich and Grace Fuller will bring six of their wines, five of which are 2013 Maryland Governors Cup Gold Medal winners and one is a Finger Lakes International Gold Medal winner - a basket full of Southern Maryland gold!

2011 Chardonnay
2011 McIntosh Run - Apple wine
2011 Chaptico Rose'
2010 Captain's Table - dry red blend
2010 Chambourcin Reserve - Finger Lakes Gold medal winner
2010 Autumn Frost - dessert wine

Help us welcome our newest vendor and another great Maryland winery to the Cheverly Community Market family this Saturday!

Community at the Market: Prince George's County Master Gardeners

The Prince George's County Master Gardeners return to Cheverly Community Market this Saturday for the final Plant Clinic of 2013. Their primary focus will be planning next spring’s vegetable gardens, so bring those questions, ideas and seed catalogs and plan to spend some time at the Master Gardeners tent.

Many thanks the University of Maryland Extension Master Gardner's Program, Dave and Casey Kneipp, and the rest of the incredibly knowledgeable Master Gardeners for sharing their wisdom with us throughout the 2013 season.

This week at the Market: Waltz Family Farm

A Cheverly Community Market favorite is Laurie Waltz of Waltz Family Farm. Laurie loves to share stories and recipes, and she develops personal relationships with her customers. Those relationships are at the heart of Cheverly Community Market: knowing where your food comes from and knowing who grows it is good for the community and for everyone involved.
Laurie updates us on what she'll have this Saturday morning at Cheverly Community Market:
Our freezers are full once more and we'll bring  a great selection this Saturday. Our pork supply is overflowing and we’ll have some cuts we haven’t had for the past market or two, like Loin Roasts, Bone-in Pork Chops and Pork Kabobs/Stew meat. If you want to start stocking up on beef or lamb, do so this weekend while we still have a nice selection! The beef we picked up recently is extra tender and lean, full of flavor -- it was aged four weeks. We are taking quite a few animals to the butcher at the end of October so we'll be fully stocked for the holiday markets. If you have any requests, now is the time to ask -- just stop by on Saturday or email me.
Visit Waltz Family Farms this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market for responsibly grown and butchered meats from a family you know. You'll be glad you did.

This week at the Market: Martha's Jams

Cheverly's own Martha Allen has been busy at work on Martha's Jams over our break. This week, in addition to your favorites, she has fresh apple butter and peach butter. Martha's Jams are great on toast, in sandwiches, in marinades and basting sauces, swirled into your morning oatmeal or yogurt, or in cookies, fillings, or over ice cream. Stock up on a few jars this weekend at Cheverly Community Market and enjoy the tastes of a lovely warm summer throughout the cold winter months!
