First Locavores Get To Work!

First Lady Michelle Obama and local students recently broke ground on the White House Kitchen Garden, the first vegetable garden at the White House since Eleanor Roosevelt's garden. The produce will be served at the White House and extra produce will be donated to Miriam's Kitchen, a local resource for the city's homeless population. So what's growing in the White House Kitchen Garden? Go to the White House Blog to see a detailed diagram. There's lots of spinach, peas, lettuce, broccoli and herbs. Did you get a plot for the Cheverly Vegetable Gardens? Do you have extra space in your yard? A little yard, but some space for container gardening? We encourage our Cheverly Community Market friends to grow their food (and, of course, supplement your bounty with beautiful fresh produce, seafood, meat, breads and other wonderful products from the Cheverly Community Market!)

Basic Veggie Gardening 101 Tonight and Saturday!

Members of the Prince George’s Master Gardeners will be holding a ‘Vegetable Gardening 101’ class at the Cheverly Community Center Friday, March 6th at 7PM and Saturday, March 7th at 2PM. The one-hour class is for the plot holders of the Cheverly Vegetable Gardens and other interested vegetable gardeners in Cheverly. Get an application and guidelines for the Cheverly Vegetable Gardens here. A third class will be held at the Cheverly Garden Club meeting held on Monday, March 16th. The Garden Club meets at the Cheverly United Methodist Church at 7 PM in the 4th floor Parlor Room. The public is welcome to attend. Cheverly Vegetable Gardens at Boyd Park

Cheverly is growing! The new Cheverly Vegetable Gardens at Boyd Park has 41 4’x 20’ garden plots available on a first-come, first-served basis. Many town residents can’t have a garden on their own property for a variety of reasons, including terrain, shade and a lack of available land. The Cheverly Vegetable Gardens will provide a sunny, level place to plant your lettuce in the spring, beans and tomatoes over the summer, and pumpkins in the fall. This is a great opportunity to supplement the great produce you'll get at the Market this season, take part in a community organization (literally at its roots!) and learn and share knowledge with other Cheverly vegetable gardeners!
