This week at the Market: Cakes by Ruthann

We are big fans of Andrea and Nicky and all the wonderful treats they bring to Cheverly Community Market via Cakes by Ruthann. Over the years that they've been part of the Market, we've discovered many new favorite tastes, including rich Jamaican rum cake, aromatic Jamaican coffee, spicy ginger drink, and delectable Jamaican patties.

This weekend, visit Cakes by Ruthann for your morning fixings: peach turnovers, zucchini bread, banana nut bread and much more, including Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee to go with your breakfast pastry. Cakes by Ruthann will also be fully stocked with cookies, cakes, pies, fruit-based beverages and those famous Jamaican patties, so make sure to stop by for an island-inspired breakfast and pick up great food for the rest of your day, too!

Cakes by Ruthann brings us delicious tastes from far-off islands using local produce. There are so many ways to buy local, and we love seeing how everyone -- vendors and customers alike -- supports local farmers. Andrea and Nicki use fresh, local fruit to make their delectable peach punch, the very popular strawberry lemonade, and mini apple pies. Make sure to visit Cakes by Ruthann at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday and try some of these ultra local treats!

The spicy jerk chicken patties are back along with spinach, beef and curry chicken Jamaican patties. In many hot climates, the common wisdom is to consume spicy foods to combat especially warm days -- why not try it this Saturday?!

Cakes by Ruthann has the perfect island-inspired tastes to cool you down this summer. Saturday, stop by for refreshing homemade Caribbean limeade, strawberry lemonade, and spicy ginger beer, as well as   your favorite cookies, cakes and Jamaican baked goods. Have you tried the Jamaican patties yet? A real delicacy -- we know of at least one teenage boy who lives on these during the Market. He'll forgo ice cream, pastries, and everything else for these delicacies. That's high praise!

June 24 through 30 is Caribbean Cuisine and Restaurant Week and Cakes by Ruthann is celebrating at Cheverly Community Market!

The Skinny on Ruthann’s Strawberry Lemonade

That’s right, we don’t use store bought “Strawberry” juices or pre-made strawberry lemonade mix but the real thing, strawberries.

People have asked why our strawberry lemonade tastes so good. The secret is ………..

WE USE REAL STRAWBERRIES! I buy local! What I mean by that is, I buy my fresh strawberries from farmer’s that are at the farmer’s market that I serve. For example, I buy my strawberries from Shlagel Farms and Benny’s at Cheverly Market, and Musachio Produce and any farmer at Riverdale Park that has strawberries that week.

We think it's important for our customers to know that our vendors support each other -- please show your support!

At Holiday Market: Cakes by Ruthann

We're always thrilled to see Cakes by Ruthann at Cheverly Community Market -- there's always something tasty to eat. The only downside is exercising the willpower to not eat everything we buy before it even leaves the Market! This Saturday, stop by Cakes by Ruthann for super-delicious stocking stuffers like Jingle Balls (rum balls), holiday-inspired sugar cookies and gingerbread cookies, holiday-inspired chocolates, and Coconut Drops (coconut brittle). She'll also have pies and small decorated Jamaican black rum cakes, and Sorrel (the Caribbean holiday drink), Ginger beer, and Jamaican patties (beef, chicken, spinach) that make for a lovely early Market lunch.

Interested in ordering larger Jamaican Black Rum Cakes? They can be purchased online after December 15 at Island Queen Cuisine. The Rum Cake would make a lovely gift or start a new tradition in your home and include one in your holiday menu!

This Week at the Market: Cakes by Ruthann

One of our favorite things about Cheverly Community Market is the opportunity to try new things and discover new favorites. This season, we've definitely discovered quite a few of them at Cakes by Ruthann...and one of our favorite favorites? Dark Rum Cake. This rich, dense cake is heavy with spice and rum -- absolutely delicious! Pick up some for yourself this Saturday. Andrea will have rum cake as well as Jamaican patties (beef, chicken, callaloo) for you to stock up on until our November and December markets. And back by popular demand will be the authentic Jamaican jerk chicken. We tried it and loved it -- spicy and delicious on a soft roll. Fantastic...especially with a spicy ginger beer to warm you up on a chilly autumn morning!

We are real fans of everything Cakes by Ruthann. Andrea and Nicole make amazing authentic Jamaican patties, rum balls, ginger beer, cupcakes, Jamaican sweets and more, and we've loved every morsel! This week, eat and do something good at the same time: since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Cakes by Ruthann will have special pink ribbon cookies for sale. Proceeds of the sale will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. You can also get a cup of that amazing ginger beer -- the spiciness will take the edge of a chilly autumn morning -- and pick up a small 
Jamaican rum cake. They're on special this Saturday only: just $5!

Andrea and Nicki continue to bring us island delights -- and for that, we are truly grateful for Cakes by Ruthann! Recently, we've had the good fortune to enjoy amazing rum balls, spicy Jamaican patties (including callaloo), fragrant coconut candies, our favorite ginger beer and more fantastic treats. If you enjoyed the authentic Jamaican patties (and we know many of you did last Market, as Nicki had to run back to the kitchen for more!), you'll love the sweet version, the Jamaican plantain tart. Cakes by Ruthann will have this sweet treat this Saturday, so make sure to stop by and try these delectable goodies. We can't wait!
