Thank you for a terrific morning!

Thank you to all of our vendors, volunteers, and customers for spending Saturday morning with us! After a very wet start to the morning, the sun -- and humidity -- brought what many of us think of as classic DC-region summer weather. Through it all, you spent your morning with us, and we are, as always, very grateful for your support.

Believe it or not, we're closing in on the midway point to our Market season -- the July 28 Market is the sixth of the 12 regular Market dates this season (not including our Thanksgiving and Holiday dates). That means that we're truly at the height of the season! It certainly shows, given all the beautiful food and craft we saw this Saturday. Photos will be posted on our flickr group page very soon.

We need  to extend a special thank you to Volunteer Coordinator Mike Callahan and his crew for the tremendous amount of work they did setting up in the rain and helping vendors and the band get ready -- a big task accomplished with ever-present grace and humor -- thank you. We're also extending a big thanks to KidMarket Coordinator Rachel Dabney Rice, resident bee expert Eileen Shlagel, and Zumba pro Ronald Johnson for a fascinating, lively KidMarket. Finally, to talented musicians of the Roosevelt Dixieland Combo from Eleanor Roosevelt High School -- many, many thanks for a wonderful morning of Dixieland jazz. What a treat!

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone -- our vendors, customers, and volunteers -- for coming out on Saturday morning. We really appreciate your support, especially under such challenging circumstances. We hope you all have power (remember, mandatory water restrictions are still in effect!) and that life returns to normal soon!

We will post photos from Saturday this week -- in the meantime, here are a few iPhone shots.

Again, thank you for supporting Cheverly Community Market. We're deeply grateful that so many of you came out to share the morning with us.

Thank you for a spectacular opening day!

That was even better than we'd hoped for...and our hopes were pretty high! From vendors selling everything they brought with them to over 70 kids participating in KidMarket, today was a BIG success. We owe it to you -- our volunteers, our vendors, our patrons -- for making this a truly special way to begin the 2012 season! From all of us at Cheverly Community Market, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

I was struck by how many people I observed today truly tasting -- and truly enjoying -- food. Luscious, still slightly warm from the field strawberries, pastries, cupcakes, ice cream, Jamaican patties, and my favorite -- ginger beer. I had been thinking about that specific taste since our Holiday Market last year -- sharp and sweet yet mild, too. It was such a treat to be reintroduced to it this morning, and a joy to find that it was just as delicious (maybe even more) than I remembered. I suspect that I was not alone in revisiting some of my favorite tastes from past Markets this morning, and I hope you found your old favorites and some new loves, too.

We'll have photos up on our flickr page in a day or two (we really need a little rest!) but keep checking the blog this week for recipes and stories, and next week for information on all the great vendors we'll have for you at our next Market on June 3. And if you want to be a sign ambassador, let us know -- we have only a few left and we'd love to have your help in spreading the word about Cheverly Community Market!

End of the 2011 Season: Holiday Market Wrap Up & More

Thank you to EVERYONE who came out this Saturday for our final Cheverly Community Market of the season! It was an amazing turnout -- and a great pleasure to meet so many new people. We hope you were able to get lots of your holiday shopping done while enjoying a morning with your friends and neighbors here in Cheverly. See photos from a wonderful Holiday Market -- and all of our Markets -- on our flickr page.

A special thanks to our guest musician, Daniel Flores, to the many, many volunteers who donated their time to setting up and cleaning up, and to our vendors who have supported us through thick and thin. We've said it before, but it definitely bears repeating: Cheverly Community Market is a community effort. We rely on you -- as a customer, as a vendor, or as a volunteer -- to keep us going and to help us grow.

We want to extend a very heartfelt thank you to our Market Manager this season, Barbara Scully Liston. Barbara has been an institution in Cheverly -- she's taught many of our children and has been an important part of the fabric of our community for many years. Those of us who have been fortunate to know her as a friend count ourselves very rich. And those of us who have had the great good fortune to have our young children educated by her -- well, that's a gift that will grow forever. Cheverly Community Market was tremendously lucky that she agreed to take us on this year, and we are deeply grateful. So thank you, Barbara, from the bottom of our hearts. We wish you all the best in Florida -- your family is so fortunate to have you there and we know you'll absolutely shine in your new grandma role!

So here we are at the end of the 2011 season. We're going to hibernate for a bit after the holidays, but we're already excited about next year... There's lots in store, so make sure to visit the blog when you can. We'll have posts featuring recipes, food for thought and the very latest Market news. And if you're missing the site of luscious local food and gorgeous Saturday mornings at the Cheverly Community Center, you can always pay a visit to our flickr page -- nearly 6,300 photos!

We hope you found many of the ingredients that you'll use this thanksgiving holiday...and got a leg up on your holiday shopping to boot!

We have to get to work on our holiday meals now, but hope you enjoy reliving Thanksgiving Market (or seeing what all the fuss is about) on our flickr group page.

Safe travels and have a wonderful Thanksgiving. And thank you for making Cheverly Community Market part of your life.

Great October Market!

Market Manager Barbara Liston shares her wonderful photos from this weekend's Market...new and old vendors, the cucumber regatta (named from the zucchini regatta), gorgeous weather... what a morning! Thanks, as always, to our vendors and volunteers for all the work you do, and to you shoppers for supporting Cheverly Community Market.

Great Morning at the Market!

The weather cooperated again -- we have been really fortunate this season!

Did you get any sausage from Stanley at Simply Sausage? Ice cream? BBQ? How about some of those amazing pears and apples from the Reberts? Herbs from New Starts? Lots of great vegetables from the Shlagels? Steaks from the Waltz family? Seafood from Two Oceans? And how about jams, breads, and cheese? There was a true bounty this morning, and we're so thankful to all our vendors for coming to Cheverly this morning!

Special thanks goes to the Eleanor Roosevelt High School Dixieland Combo -- you sounded great this morning! To CPRC for Storytime (thanks Nancy!) And, as always, to the many volunteers who help put together every market -- you're a wonderful crew.

Finally, thanks to all our customers. We are so proud to be part of this amazing community.

Photos will be posted Sunday this week...

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

What a truly lovely Market we had yesterday! From the amazing barbeque to the last of the summer peaches, from the delicious breads and cakes to a fantastic array of apple varieties, it was a wonderful morning. And the very best part? You. Our friends. Our customers. Our vendors. Our volunteers. We are more appreciative of your support than we could ever truly express.

Special thanks to Cakes by Ruthann for providing an amazing Jamaican dark rum cake to help us celebrate Charles' birthday. What a treat! He was truly surprised and touched by all the warm wishes from everyone at the Market.

And congratulations again to our raffle winner, Helen Kays! She received a $20 certificate good at any one of our vendors through the October 22 Market. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Photos from the day are being posted even as I write this to our flickr page. This was such a beautiful Market -- you'll want to make sure to relive it!

Again, thank you all for your continued support. We are proud to be part of the Cheverly community.

Thank You All!

We want to thank everyone -- our customers, our vendors, our volunteers -- for coming out in advance of Hurricane Irene this morning. We hope you're well-stocked and prepared for the storm! We also want to send a very special thanks to the Cheverly Department of Public Works for helping us with taking the Market inside for the morning. Thank you all so much for supporting Cheverly Community Market...it means a great deal to all of us to be part of this wonderful community.

Photos will be posted soon...first, we need to batten down the hatches a bit! Please take the precautions you need to be safe.
UPDATE: Photos are up on our flickr page!

What we saw at the Market this week...

What a great morning! The weather cooperated...an hour later and we would have been in a deluge of much-needed rain! We saw lots of new faces this week -- welcome! We saw people talking about food -- where it comes from, favorite preparations...lots of great conversations! We saw fruits and vegetables that looks either like there was fire inside (red plums like I've never seen) or part of a gorgeous painting. Amazing. And of course, adults and children alike enjoying ice cream (that lemon custard is a work of art!)

Thanks to all of you -- vendors, customers, and most of all, our volunteers, for getting together for another great Saturday at Cheverly Community Market. Every other Saturday, we're reminded what makes Cheverly a truly special place. We're proud to be part of your community.

Photos will be up on our flickr page very soon (they're uploading right now!) Make sure to visit our blog over the next two weeks -- we have lots of recipes and food for thought in store for you!

Thank you!

Thank you to our vendors, volunteers and customers for coming out on this hot, humid morning! We appreciate your continued support. It's great to be part of the Cheverly community.

This week, we'll post more recipes, more food for thought, and a surprise or two. We hope you join us in the weeks between Markets to stay connected! Photos from this morning -- and there was a lot to see -- are up on our flickr page! More than anything, the sense of community was apparent this week, and our photos reflect that wonderful spirit. Hope you enjoy them! See you at the Market...August 13!

A Great Market...Thank YOU!

What a gorgeous morning for a Market! Thanks you -- as always -- to the vendors, volunteers, and customers who join us every other week for four hours of shopping, eating, indulging, and friendship. I spoke to a young woman this morning who had grown up in Cheverly and moved away. This was the first time she'd been in town for one of our Markets, and she couldn't believe how lovely it is.

This morning I learned some interesting things, among them: - Adults and children eat ice cream in very different ways. Kids attack it -- they enjoy every single taste. Adults taste, look, taste, examine, taste... It was funny, and I noticed it over and over and over. - Eve's Italian Colby grated over hot noodles may be the best pasta and cheese recipe you'll ever have.

Want to relive the sights of the morning? See what you missed? Visit our flickr page. We have over 4,200 photos spanning the history of Cheverly Community Market, and we're still growing!

Thank you!

Thank you for another great Market! To our vendors, our volunteers and customers -- we always appreciate your attendance...but on 90f+ degree mornings? You're fantastic!

So what were your favorite things this morning? For me, the smell of those gorgeous peaches warming under the sun is summer (I've already had three since I came home!) It was great to chat at the Two Oceans Seafood tent about car trips we took as kids, a cold water from the St. Ambrose Common Ground Coffee tent was very welcome, and  the enticing scent of those sausages being cooked and prepared for sampling...well. And, of course, sampling local wines from Elk Run Winery is always a treat.

I made a special Market brunch when I got home: a lovely omelette with Eve's BBQ Colby (have you tried it? Spicy, creamy...yum!), wheat toast with Martha's Berry Preserves (the taste of gorgeous whole berries really comes through), and another of those peaches (I may be a little obsessed). I cannot think of a better way to celebrate summer and a gorgeous (if hot) Saturday morning.

We have loads of new photos up on our flickr page. If you missed the Market, or want to remember all the wonderful sights and sounds, make sure to visit!

See you at our next Cheverly Community Market -- Saturday, July 16!

Thanks for a great morning!

That was a wonderful morning...seems like every Market is better than the last, and that's thanks to everyone -- vendors, volunteers and customers alike! We couldn't do it without all of you!

Our next Market date is July 2nd -- just in time for those Fourth of July cookouts...start planning now (we know there are some competitive cooks here in Cheverly!) We'll have everything you need to make your holiday meal truly special...and the Market is a great way to kick off a long weekend!

Over the next two weeks, we'll bring you some special Market stories, some new recipes, links and more. In the meantime, if you want to relive this morning -- or any other Market date -- visit our flickr page. We're closing in on 4,000 photographs of our four years. And if you take photographs at the Market, please feel free to join the group and add them to the pool. We always love to see a variety of perspectives!

Cook some wonderful meals, plan your holiday festivities and visit the blog over the next two weeks...until we see you again at the Market!

Great Market -- thanks everyone!

Thanks to everyone -- our vendors, volunteers and customers -- for coming out on a rainy morning and enjoying the last Market of the regular season. We had some wonderful late additions to our lineup (Mystic Water, Al Pong, Linda Priebe, and New Starts Farm) and it was a terrific Saturday morning. We hope you enjoyed yourselves, too! Thank You, Cheverly!

Wow! What a fantastic Market on Cheverly Avenue today. Many thanks to everyone who came out, especially our organizers, volunteers, Cheverly Police, Public Works, Mayor and Town Council, community groups and, of course, our wonderful vendors. It was amazing to see so many new faces -- people who had never been to Cheverly Community Market before. We hope that you come to see us at our regular Community Center location, too! We'd like to hear from you. Did you like the Market on Cheverly Avenue? Are you a regular, or was thus your first visit? Please let us know what you think. We love being part of the community, and need your input to make this the Market that you want. Photos will be posted on our flickr page shortly! See you October 10 at the Community Center for the next Cheverly Community Market!
