Thank you!

Thank you for a truly memorable Market! We're so very grateful to our vendors, our volunteers, customers and the community for an amazing season...it went too fast!

From all the wonderful seasonal foods, to the amazing wines, luscious smells of sausage cooking, volunteer groups, kids, artisans...we had a wonderful morning on Saturday, and hope you did, too! Relive the morning -- or see what you missed -- on our flickr page.

We'll be taking a little break until our Thanksgiving Market on November 19, but rest assured, we're working hard to make our seasonal Markets great events. Keep an eye on the blog for details on vendors, some holiday recipes and more!

See you at the Thanksgiving Market on November 19!

This Week at the Market: The October 22nd Edition

It's hard to imagine, but we're at our last regular Market of the 2011 season...seems like just yesterday we were eagerly anticipating those first delicate fruits and vegetables on spring, and now we're thinking about the holidays!

In addition to Saturday's regular market (8:00am-noon), we still have two special seasonal markets; our Thanksgiving Market on November 19 (9:00am-1:00pm) and our Holiday Market on December 10 (also 9:00am-1:00pm). We have all sorts of exciting vendors lined up for those days, and look forward to seeing old and new friends at both!

This Saturday, bundle up and join us at the Community Center (it's supposed to be sunny but quite chilly!) to stock up on the best local seasonal foods and artisan offerings you can find. Here's our lineup:

Start stocking up on thoughtful gifts for the holidays ahead. Visit our Cheverly Community Groups -- donate animal food with the Daisies, learn about our local environmental treasure, pick up the things you need to get your lawn in order and your garden looking gorgeous in the spring. Take the kids for CPRC storytime at 10:00am. Grab some hot coffee and a pastry, chat with your friends and neighbors and have a word or two with our Mayor. This is the kind of Market that really captures the great spirit of Cheverly Community Market and of our town. We can't wait to share the morning with you! See you Saturday morning at the Market!

At the Market This Week: Shlagel Farms

Sounds like the Shlagels have had a quite a few Cheverly visitors at the farm this fall -- how great! Eileen sends these two notes; first about all the wonderful things that Shjlagel Farms will have at Cheverly Market this Saturday (make sure to welcome Eileen's son, Karl), and a second about fun fall activities at the farm. Read both and make plans to see the Shlagels several times over the weekend! I'm going to let Eileen's words speak for themselves here...

Hello Cheverly,
Thanks to all of you that have been down to the farm to vist.  We really appreciate it!  We will be there this Saturday with: apples, acorn squash, butternut squash, yellow and green squash, cabbage, broccoli, green beans, red potatoes, sweet potatoes, grape tomatoes, maybe a few large tomatoes, large green peppers, red peppers, eggplant, speciality peppers, kale and collards and onions.  This Saturday my son Karl will be covering the market for me as I have to take care of all the customers at the farm.  This Saturday, on the farm, Bay K9 Search and Rescue dogs; Millie and Edgar will be visiting from 10-3p and providing demonstrations.  Shop at the market at all your favorite vendors and then think about a visit to the pumpkin patch!

Hello Farm Friends!
Have you picked your fall pumpkin yet? Hurry up and don’t let October pass you by without a trip to the farm to visit the pumpkin patch! This weekend promises to be another beautiful weekend and perfect for your family outing. Make it part of your family’s traditions with a picnic lunch and great memories captured on film.
We’re open 10a-5p Saturdays and Sundays in October. We have our corn box that provides hours of simple fun and our straw maze that incorporates critical thinking skills with running and sliding fun for little people, a full petting zoo for kids of all ages and an informational hay ride around the farm with Farmer Russ. The tractor stops at the pumpkin patch and if you’d like to get off and pick a pumpkin there are still great ones available. The last hay ride goes out at about 4:15. If you would like to make a scarecrow for your yard bring old clothes and a pillowcase for the head. We’ll provide the straw stuffing and instructions at no extra charge.
In the barn we have our delicious fruit ciders, jams, butters, and syrups as well as fresh seasonal produce offered for sale. We also have straw bales and beautiful mums for decorating your yard. The straw bales are $5.00 each and the mums are $5 each or 5 for $25. Hello Farm Friends!

We Need a Few Good Volunteers!

Can you lend a hand with setup or breakdown this Saturday? We could use extra hands at Cheverly Community Market and hope that you can help!

If you can help setup tables and chairs, tents, or help vendors unload their trucks from 7:30 to 8:15am, we could really use you! Can you help put away tables and chairs, break down tents and get our vendors on their way after Market from11:30am until about 12:30pm? We could really use you, too! Know a teenager (or almost teen) that could help? We welcome you!

Cheverly Community Market, like so many organizations in Cheverly, runs on the strength of its volunteers. You can show you support the Market by helping us this Saturday...and you'll earn our undying gratitude for your efforts!

If you can lend a hand, please email us...and many thanks!

At the Market This Week: Deep Discounts on Compost Bins (Thanks, Environmental Committee!)

Thanks to Progressive Cheverly's Environmental Committee, SoilSaver compost bins are available to Cheverly residents for only $20 (reg. price up to $99.98 at Amazon & other locations) at the Market this Saturday. It's a great deal for you and the world around you!

The low price has been made possible by grants from the Chesapeake Bay Trust (through the Green Infrastructure Plan Committee grant), the NIE Institute, and the Town of Cheverly. Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek (FLBC) is administering the grants and the Environmental Committee of Progressive Cheverly is implementing the program. This is a comprehensive plan to encourage all residents to compost food scraps, waste paper like paper towels, napkins and tissue, and other compost-able materials to reduce Town tipping fees and improve overall waste management. Of course, you’ll also produce great compost to amend your garden, bushes and lawn. Their goal is to place 400 bins over three years... a goal that, if realized, will save the Town over $56,000 in tipping fees over the next 10 years.

Interested? Stop by and talk to Doug Alexander this Saturday at the Market. He can explain more about the benefits and process of composting, and get you going on a great project!

At the Market This Week: Simply Sausage

Cheverly resident Ann Barsi alerted us to a great article about Bethesda's Bold Bite in the Washington Post's Food Section. The secret ingredient in Bold Bites Show Dogs? Simply Sausage!

Here's Ann's take:

Yesterday’s Food Section of the Post had a very good review of BOLD BITE – a new Hot-Doggery in Bethesda.  The reviewer credits the tastiness of the sausages to supplier Simply Sausage. Of course we here in Cheverly already knew the wonders of Simply Sausage, as Stanley shares wonderful samples of his wursts at every Cheverly Community Market.  So take a hint from the Bold Bite review: get some of Stanley’s sausages at the Market this Saturday, pile on the toppings, and have your very own Bold Bite at home!
Buon Appetito!
Ann

Ann's right -- we are definitely in the know! Make sure to stop by and visit with Stan this Saturday morning at Cheverly Community Market. Try a sample, then pick up the very best ingredients for your very own culinary masterpiece!

At the Market This Week: Martha's Jams

Cheverly's own Martha Allen makes really lovely jams, both traditional and unusual flavors.

This week, Martha has sugar-free varieties, apple butter, orange-mango and grape-raspberry-strawberry, as well as fresh cranberry-ginger. I bet that cranberry-ginger would be great spooned on a roasted sweet potato or some grilled pork. It would also be lovely in jam cookies...start planning your holiday baking, and include Martha's jams!
