This week at the Market: Shlagel Farms

Make sure to stop by Shlagel Farms at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday to stock up on the most wonderful local, fresh Maryland produce. Eileen will bring wonderful food that truly celebrates National Farmer's Market Week: white sweet corn, kale, collard greens, scallions, cabbage, carrots, beets, potatoes, sweet onions, squash, zucchini, green peppers, speciality peppers, eggplant, tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, peaches, black and blueberries, cucumbers, cantaloupes, watermelons, green beans, and brown eggs. 

And please make sure to vote for Cheverly Community Market in the American Farmland Trust I Love My Farmer's Market 2013 competition -- all you have to do is pledge to spend at least $10 each week at the Market. Music from the Market: Little Big Boss

We are very glad to have our friends Little Big Boss back at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday. The band is Cheverly resident Nathan Lorentz (dad of Lydia, husband of Natalie), joined by Jeff McGlew and his fiancee, Roz Vanderpol. You may know Nathan as the drummer from longtime Cheverly band The Hot Noodles, and Jeff as the drummer from Oversocialized (he's also sat in on drums a few times at the Market.)

Here's how the band describes their music:

Little Big Boss is what happens when you think you're in charge but you're not. Three seasoned artists decided to take on new endeavors and create music together. Jeff and Nathan, percussionists at heart have picked up guitar and bass, respectively. Visual artist Roz is a newcomer on the microphone.

This week at the Market: Little Peeps Emporium

Elsa Spezio of Little Peeps Emporium returns to Cheverly Community Market this Saturday! Looking for a sweet gift for the coming school year? Stop by the Little Peeps tent and find lovely necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. Elsa has been busy making lots of new things, including some great earrings featuring lampwork glass beads made by an artisan in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, so visit her and find something special for yourself or a very lucky student!

Community at the Market: Maryland Master Gardeners

Have you been interested in growing a bit of food on your own but really didn't know how to go about it? Join the Maryland Master Gardeners this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market for a special plant clinic focusing on ‘container gardening’ for those in apartments or for those who have plenty of shade trees and not much area for planting vegetables. Container gardening is also a great way to introduce kids to taking care of plants...maybe even broadening their interest in food and cooking.

We were so happy to have Bob Cecil of Elk Run Vineyards with us at our last Market -- so many wonderful wines to sample! Bob is back this week, which is a special treat -- if you tried something at our last Market and didn't buy (or didn't buy enough!) you have a golden opportunity this Saturday.

Elk Run Vineyards from Frederick County will be returning to Cheverly Farmers Market this Saturday, August 10. Taking over 600 International, National and Regional awards has made Elk Run not only one of the top 100 wineries on the east coast, but the most acclaimed winery in Maryland. In 2012, Elk Run won 10 Gold Medals and 4 Gold 'Best of Class' in the Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition. . . the first winery to have done so in the history of that competition. 

This week, Elk Run will be bringing a wide selection of top wines including our just-released 2012 Cold Friday Vineyard Chardonnay - a crisp, refrehing, less-oaky style white from our 18-year old vineyard. We are also bringing our new 2011 Syrah that received an "Exceptional" rating from the Beverage Testing Institute. We will also be pouring samples of our Port and Vin de Jus Glace premium dessert wines as well as our extremely popular fresh Sangria. Finally, try a sample of our Gewurztraminer - a wine with an unpronouncable name but with outstanding flavors of lychee fruit, spice and floral notes.
