New Vendor: Handmade Habitat

We're thrilled to welcome new vendor Handmade Habitat to Cheverly Community Market this Saturday. Amina Ahmad (of Takoma Park) makes wonderful contemporary items -- she has a great sense of design and style, and we can't wait to share her wares with you!

Here's a description of Amina and her work from her lovely Etsy shop:
I am obsessed with all things handmade and I believe that handmade can encompass every part of our lives. As the oldest of three children, learning how to do things for myself has always been a big part of my life, and as such, I have become a non-stop sewing, crafting, making machine!
I am very inspired by nature and my in my work, it is important to me to embrace simplicity and allow the natural beauty of the fabrics and colors I use to shine through. I love working with colors, shapes, tones and patterns that mimic the Earth. I primarily work with natural fabrics such as cotton, organic cotton and burlap and hand-dye many of my pieces to get custom, rustic and rich colors.
I create for all aspects of our lives - wearing, working, playing and even the cat gets some love.
For you, the home, the cat & with love for the Earth.
This Saturday, come out, meet Amina, and find beautiful locally made soy candles, cotton scarves, sachets, and catnip toys. It's a great time to start thinking about thoughtful gifts...and wonderful additions to your home and wardrobe!

New Vendor: Linganore Winecellars

photo via Linganore Winecellars' blog
We are very excited to welcome a new winery to Cheverly Community Market this Saturday: Linganore Winecellars. According to winemaker Anthony Allen, “We provide wines for people who don’t need to be told what to like," while noting that many people prefer wines with residual sugar. "We're just a group of people up here having a lot of fun.” Sounds like our kind of people -- and our kind of wine.

Berrywine Plantations/Linganore Winecellars, the largest winery in Maryland, is a family-operated vineyard and winery nestled on 230 acres of picturesque rolling countryside, near historic New Market, Maryland. Established by Jack and Lucille Aellen in 1971, the winery opened in 1976. In 1977, Linganore Winecellars held Maryland’s first wine festival, and in 1978, they introduced the state’s first semi-sweet grape wines. Since 1982, Linagnore Winecellars' schedule has expanded to include five major festivals and more than 20 smaller indoor events throughout the year. In 1983, recognizing the growing interest in regionally produced wines, they worked to establish the first federally-designated grape growing area in Maryland, the Linganore Viticultural Area, which encompasses 90 square miles of land around the winery in the heart of Maryland. In 2011, power supplied to the winery was converted to 100% wind power, leading the winery to win 2011 Green Business of the Year, in the small to midsize business category, from the Baltimore Business Journal.

Melding German-Swiss winemaking heritage with Italian winemaking roots and always conscious of their customers' tastes, Linganore Winecellars has created a splendid variety of wines which have won over 200 medals in national and international competitions. Producing over 30 wines, ranging from stylish white and red dinner wines to elegant semi-sweet grape, fruit, and honey wines, the winery enjoys a reputation as a fun place to visit and a relaxed place to sample wines in a casual setting.

The wines are broken down into three basic categories: Dry Wines, Sweet Wines, and Fruit Wines (including the highly regarded Medieval Mead and Tej honey wines). Each major category is broken down into further subcategories so you can narrow your search. Visit Linganore Winecellars at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday and enjoy great Maryland wines!

This Week at the Market: New Vendor Natural Nick's Produce

We know when we're in for a big treat: please help us give a warm welcome to new vendor Natural Nick's Produce. We've been enjoying reading customer comments on their facebook page:

"the quality of this farm's soil is incomparable in today's world..., organic since the early 50's and Nick's produce, cookies, sauces & jams makes me misty! I just wish he would come cook at my house on a regular basis. He knows what garlic is and what Italian-American tastes like."

"Your baklava beat the Georgetown Cupcakes hands down! Unanimous at the dinner table this evening. Thanks again :)

"Delicious, delicious garlic. Polish Carpathian was decadent."

"I have had 1 jar of Natural Nick's hot sauce and it is amazing. Perfect mixture of sweet and spicy. If anyone adds hot sauce to their food please consider changing over to this, trust me. The Tomato Basil Sauce was delicious and I finished the jar in a matter of days. I completely recommend this sauce with anything for dinner, pasta and chicken are delicious with this."

This Week at the Market: New Vendor Good Morning Bakery

You know we're fans of baked goods. And of new vendors. We're pleased to offer a win-win here: please help us welcome new vendor Good Morning Bakery to Cheverly Community Market!
Good Morning Bakery was created by Dorea as a way to share her love of sweets and all things homey. This year you can expect to see a variety of all-from-scratch treats ranging from funfetti cake batter cookies to mocha chip scones to brownie peanut butter mousse cakelettes to butter crumb apple pies and gingerbread biscotti. Dorea’s family goes back three generations of bakers- and as a happy tribute, most of the recipes come from these family traditions- like her grandma’s caramelized pecan sweet rolls and her mom’s warm sour cream blueberry scones. So stop by and pick up a beautiful cakelette (perfect for a special dessert for two, or a midnight snack for a sweet tooth…), or a good old fashioned oatmeal cream pie, and consider yourself at home. Good Morning Bakery also caters to parties, baby showers, and everything in between. Find Good Morning Bakery on Facebook for more photos and stories -- and make sure to pay Dorea a visit this Saturday morning at Cheverly Community Market!

New Vendor: Brick House Bees

Over the past few years, we've had many requests for local honey. We are thrilled to finally be able to bring you a brand new vendor this week, Brick House Bees, from Lanham, Maryland.

Brick House Bees is a suburban apiary that offers unprocessed local honey, straight from the bees to you. What started as a desire to have a couple of hives has resulted in more honey than David Etherton and his family can use, so he's very kindly offering it in Cheverly.

Make sure to welcome David to Cheverly Community Market this weekend -- and pick up some honey for your toast, your tea, your baking...it's a great addition! And read up on the health benefits of honey here.

New Vendor: Cherry Glenn Cheese/Palmyra Cheese

"New" is something of a misnomer here -- way back in 2008, Cheverly Community Market used to sell Cherry Glen Goat Cheese and it was very popular with our customers. We're so glad to have them back with us...and they're bringing along Palmyra Farm Cheese, too! Let's put this one in the "what's old is new again" category!

Cherry Glen Farm produces hyper-fresh farmstead goat cheese in their solar creamery in Boyds, Maryland. Cherry Glen Farms strives to keep the dream of local, responsible, sustainable food alive by milking twice a day seven days per week. They do not import milk from a third party and they feed their 800 goats, milk and care for them while controlling the process from beginning to end. This is how Cherry Glen can produce an award-winning hyper fresh goat cheese that rockets from the farm directly to your table. Cherry Glen silver is mild and sweet. The ash is tangy. The chipotle is bold and smoky.Cherry Glen's divine gold is creamy and luscious. The French crottin is a show stopper and has an earthy mild flavor profile. They do not use animal rennet so no animal by- products go into the production of the cheese and vegetarians rave about the cheese. Cherry Glen is a solar facility and they are constantly striving to lower their carbon footprint.

Palmyra Farm Cheese is a local family farm located near Hagerstown, MD. Some 300 purebred registered dairy cows call the farm their home. Palmyra farm only uses whole milk produced by its cows to make its 100 percent pure pasteurized cheeses. Their cheeses are farmstead artisan cheeses and come in several variations.

The week, Barret Lang and his team will have a terrific selection of fresh goat cheese from Cherry Glen, including fresh chevre, fresh ricotta and Goat Brie -- all vegetarian-safe. They'll also have vegetarian-safe cow cheese from Palmyra, including fresh feta, Chesapeake cheddar and two amazing spreads: Dill and Blueberry.

Visit with Barret and the good people of Cherry Glen and Palmyra this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market, and help us welcome some new "old" friends!
