This Week at the Market: Kaylala Organic Apothecary

We're always happy when our friends from Kaylala Organic Apothecary come to visit us at Cheverly Community Market! As summer comes to an end the somewhat drier, colder, harsher weather is upon us, our skin can really use extra loving care!

Try the Lotion Bon Bons, which are packaged in cute little tins. They're be a great addition to your handbag or backpack. Or pick up some lip balm -- remember to protect one of your most valuable assets in cold weather! Since it's fall, Alison recommends the Lemon Meringue Cutie Pie Cuticle Cream: it's naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal -- perfect to sooth and protect cuticles from the changing temperatures. Also for the hands try one of our favorites: Lavender LaLa Lotion. It's the perfect accompaniment to the crisp autumn air. Kaylala has many wonderful body creams, scrubs, facial moisturizers, face and body cleansers, and, of course, their amazing Emu Oils, which contain essential fatty acids and do wonders for dry, chapped skin.

Autumn, the year’s last, loveliest smile.
William Cullen Bryant

Make your smile -- and everything about you -- lovely this autumn. Visit Kaylala Organic Apothecary at Cheverly Community Market!

This Week at the Market: Shlagel Farms

There is a harmony in autumn, and a luster in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been!
Percy Bysshe Shelley
Pick up some of the finest produce around as we say farewell to summer and welcome autumn this Saturday morning. Shalgel Farms will have marvelous squashes, eggplants, peppers, beets, onions, potatoes, kale, those absolutely revelatory eggs and more to make your fall meals spectacular. Need inspiration? This Week at the Market: New Starts Farm

We were so happy to have long-time Market vendor Tom Baldwin of New Starts Farm back with us last week -- he returns to the DC area as the air turns cooler each year. In some ways, he's our weather vane! Tom grows gorgeous herbs, garlic, and flowers and brings wonderful handcrafts to us as the year progresses.

This Saturday, stop by New Starts for growing things to spruce up your home and your plate. Tom will have mums, ornamental cabbages, those wonderful, aromatic herbs and more. Pick up some of each at Cheverly Community Market and enjoy their beauty and usefulness.

This Week at the Market: Eve's Cheese

Longtime Cheverly Community Market vendor Eve's Cheese makes some of the best cheeses we've ever tasted -- they've taken traditional colbys and cheddars and infused them with amazing flavors. We're especially fond of the Chesapeake Colby...and the Cheddar...and the Colby with Dill...heck, we're big fans of every variety we've tasted. You will be, too!

This Week at the Market: Gigi's Quilts

Visit Gigi's Quilts at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday and discover unique placemats (have you seen her great chalkboard placemats for kids?) as well as crochet granny bags, knit booties and tablerunners. Gigi has Redskins and Ravens table runners (and one or two for you Philly fans, too), perfect for your local NFL fan.

Gigi makes great, functional art -- perfect for gifts as the holidays approach or to add something special to your home. See for yourself this Saturday!

This Week at the Market: Two Oceans Seafood

Gaylord Clark of Two Oceans Seafood is quite an interesting  guy. In addition to being a farmer on a 82-acre farm north of Baltimore, Gaylord also specializes in sustainably fished and farmed species. He has decades of experience and extensive knowledge of fish handling and fisheries management in the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Chesapeake Bay. In the 1980s, Gaylord worked on the very first frozen-at-sea vessel to work the Atlantic waters. He maintains his own boat, the Jack of Hearts, for fishing wild salmon in Alaska during the summers.

Based in Stevenson, Maryland, the Clark family takes great pride in offering seafood sourced from strictly managed commercial fisheries, many of which have earned Marine Stewardship Council certifications for sustainability. Their recent re-association with the commercial fisheries of the East Coast has provided opportunities to draw from local fisheries whose management systems and stocks allow for sustainable harvests. Two Oceans offers seasonally available wild seafood as well as some aquaculture-based seafood which meets their high standards for product quality and environmental stewardship.

Gaylord will have a wide variety of fish at the Market this Saturday, such as Sockeye salmon fillets, Coho salmon portions, Keta salmon portions, Mahi-Mahi portions, smoked salmon, and Halibut portions. From the farm, they'll have fresh eggs, plus poultry and honey! Yum!

Community Groups at the Market: American Legion Post 108

This Saturday, register for the rescheduled "Help the Homeless Walk" in Cheverly on September 29, sponsored by the American Legion and learn about other about upcoming events!
Homelessness affects all of us. Cheverly American Legion Post 108 will host a Fannie Mae "Help The Homeless Event"on Saturday, September 29th, beginning at 11:00am at Legion Park. They're asking every family, congregation and organization to join in this community effort to end homelessness.

  • Every day, over 12,000 men, women and children are homeless in our Metro DC communities.
  • This winter the Warm Nights hypothermia shelter program provided over 5,200 bed-nights of shelter from November to April and was often overfilled.
  • Community Crisis Services, Inc. (CCSI), which handles homeless intakes in our county, received over 40,000 calls seeking homeless services.
  • More than 2,700 of our Prince George's County Public School children experienced homelessness each year.
  • Over 136,000 veterans experienced homelessness in 2009 - 11,300 of who were 18 to 30 and served in Iraq or Afghanistan.
  • There is a good chance that someone we work with, worship with, or go to school with, is homeless or in imminent danger of homelessness.
By walking, each person offers a Warm Night to someone in need.

Please register at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday, then gather at Legion Park on Saturday, September 29, at 11:00 am and walk to Legion Hall, where there'll be cotton candy, refreshments, and child and adult education on homelessness.

You need not pay to walk, but you must fill out the registration form and it would be wonderful if you could give as an individual or family - every dollar counts!

Each adult and child who signs up will get a t-shirt.

If you cannot join, you can sponsor someone to walk - as many school children walk, but cannot afford to give. All funds raised go to a local nonprofit, Community Crisis Services, Inc., (CCSI), to help ensure a Warm Night for All and avert homelessness where possible.

Upcoming Legion Community Events:

September 28, Community Night - Cheverly families, friends and community organizations -- to informally gather for "Community Nights" at the American Legion, 6:30pm until 9:30pm, for what will become a monthly event. Community members can also register for the Help the Homeless Walk on September 29.

September 29, Help the Homeless Walk - Cheverly American Legion Post 108 will host a Fannie Mae "Help The Homeless Event", rescheduled for Saturday, September 29th, beginning at 11:00am at Legion Park.   We ask every family, congregation and organization to join us in a community effort to end homelessness.

October 27, CRAB FEAST - Please join the community at the Cheverly American Legion for a night of community and fun for a Crab Feast on Saturday October 27 (4:00 - 7:00 PM).  We also ask that the community to invite neighbors and friends to join us for this special evening.  As crabs are costly and planning is necessary, we will limit the number of tickets; so please buy your tickets early.  Advanced adult tickets are $30.00, those under 12 are half price (sold only at the door), and those under 6 years-old are free.  Tickets at the door are $35.00.

Music from the Market: Charles and Kelly

Our official Market band, Charles & Kelly, make their final performing appearance of the regular season this Saturday. Make sure to stop by and thank them (and tip generously!) -- they have played many, many markets for us over the years and we're incredibly grateful for their many hours of music and hard work...and making the Market a really special place!

Start your shopping, grab a pastry and a cup of coffee, take a seat at the Market tables in the center aisle, and enjoy the work of our two very talented musicians, Kelly Fisher and Charles Andrews. They'll play from a wide catalog, including songs by the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, the Clash, Elvis Costello, and more. Ask nicely, and they may even play one or two of their own!

This Week at the Market: Cherry Glen Goat Cheese/Palmyra Farm Cheese

One of the great pleasures of the 2012 Market season has been enjoying the wonderful cheeses from Cherry Glen Goat Cheese and Palmyra Farm Cheese. Each one has a distinctive personality, and many an evening has been spent lingering over glasses of wine, chunks of cheese and a bit of crusty bread or some crackers as we plan new activities and new ways to make Cheverly Community Market even better. Really, this is a good life :)

Stop by and visit Cherry Glen and Palmyra this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market and stock up on these fantastic cheeses -- we know that you'll be inspired to think grand thoughts, too!

Community Groups at the Market: Groups working together to make compost bins available to redsidents!

The Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek, the Cheverly Garden ClubProgressive Cheverly, and the Town are working together to make SoilSaver compost bins available to Cheverly residents for just $20 (regular price up to $99.98 at Amazon and other locations). The low price has been made possible by grants from the Town of Cheverly, the Cheverly Garden Club, and Progressive Cheverly. If you know of any additional organizations that would consider making a grant/donation to support Town composting efforts, please e-mail Doug Alexander.

This is a comprehensive plan to encourage all residents to compost. The Composting Program has already reduced Town tipping fees and improved overall waste management. You’ll also produce great compost to amend your garden, bushes and lawn. The goal is to place 400 bins over three years that will save the Town over $56,000 in tipping fees over the next ten years. DON’T PUT FOOD DOWN THE DISPOSAL: Putting food scraps down your garbage disposal is the worst way to get rid of them. It takes more energy and cost more to clean wastewater when food scraps are in it. The water must first be filtered before the water is cleaned and all that food waste still ends up in the landfill. Compost vegetable food scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, etc. and trash the meat, dairy, oils, and greasy materials.

Download the Composting Guide.

Purchase a bin at the Cheverly Community Market this Saturday. If that doesn't work for your schedule, email Doug and he'll arrange for you to pick one up later next week.  This is a great opportunity to purchase compost bins at very low cost! And what a great way to get the most from your purchases. We hope you'll take advantage of this project!

This Week at the Market: Running Hare Vineyard

Did you know that Cheverly Community Market has a long tradition of supporting local wineries? We were the first farmer's market in Maryland to include wineries. We have supported new legislation that allows wineries to ship their products and we're proud to support Maryland wineries as they grow and prosper, and our Winery Liaison, Board Member Cathy Wintermyer, continues to build on these strong relationships.

This week, Cheverly Community Market favorite Running Hare Vineyard returns to Cheverly for the first time since June, and we are eager to welcome them back! Running Hare Vineyard produces numerous award-winning wines, including three international gold medalists. Following its' official opening in 2008, five of Running Hare Vineyard's six wines received medals in the Maryland Governor's Cup Wine Competition; a first ever for a new winery! Learn more about the impressive offerings of this wonderful local vineyard at their website. Even better, stop by and welcome the Scarboroughs to Cheverly Community Market thus Saturday!

Special Event: $25 Gift Certificate Raffle

Our first raffle of the 2012 season was a huge success -- thanks to everyone who participated and congratulations to Andrea Tavares, our first winner! We'll continue this week with another $25 gift certificate...we're holding this special raffle over the final three regular Markets of our season!

For the remainder of the regular season, tickets ($1 each/6 for $5) will be available at the big green Market tent for a chance to win a certificate good for $25 in products from our vendors. Winners will be drawn and announced at 10:30am, so visit us early! This is a great opportunity to take a chance and try some new things or stock up on old favorites!

Looking for ways to add a little sweetness -- and maybe a little spice -- to your cooking? Try Martha's Jams! Of course, they're delicious on toast, but there are so many ways to enhance your recipes using fresh jams and preserves. They really add depth to many a marinade or dressing, a wonderful sweetness to shortbread or crepes...there are many suggestions here, or visit us on pinterest for lots of recipes that feature jams! Then visit Martha's Jams at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday to stock up on this wonderful kitchen secret!

This week, Helen promises to have some surprises in store for us...we can't wait to see!

This Week at the Market: Cakes by Ruthann

Andrea and Nicki continue to bring us island delights -- and for that, we are truly grateful for Cakes by Ruthann! Recently, we've had the good fortune to enjoy amazing rum balls, spicy Jamaican patties (including callaloo), fragrant coconut candies, our favorite ginger beer and more fantastic treats. If you enjoyed the authentic Jamaican patties (and we know many of you did last Market, as Nicki had to run back to the kitchen for more!), you'll love the sweet version, the Jamaican plantain tart. Cakes by Ruthann will have this sweet treat this Saturday, so make sure to stop by and try these delectable goodies. We can't wait!

This Week at the Market: Waltz Family Farm

Mmmm...there's a hint of the crisp air of autumn and we're ready for heartier fare! Waltz Family Farm provides delicious meat to us -- beef, pork, and lamb...and now sausages! We're excited to explore some new flavors and expand our cooking repertoire with some old favorites.

This week, Laurie will have a great stock of beef, including New York Strip, Delmonico and Sirloin Steaks,  some Filet Mignon,  beef stew and ground beef, short ribs, roasts,  beef italian sausage (very tasty, we hear!), and beef hot dogs stuffed with jalapeno and cheddar – awesome!

The Waltzes will also have some very nice cuts of lamb: they recently had two 4-H lambs butchered and the Leg of Lamb and Shoulder Roasts are beautiful. If you're planning on lamb for a holiday meal, these cuts would be perfect, so get them while they're here -- they aren't usually offered in this size!  Pre-orders for these would be appreciated, but a few will be available at the Market. Interested? E-mail Laurie directly.

The Waltz's pork supply is well-stocked with more is on the way soon. They’ll be bringing sausages and kielbasa to Cheverly this Saturday!  Sausage flavors are Breakfast,  Applewurst, Hot Italian, and Polish, and maybe -- if we're lucky -- a few Sage sausages, too. We can't wait to try everything!

This Week at the Market: Cafe Ambrosia

Have you ever noticed that strong, hot coffee tastes especially good outdoors on a crisp fall morning? It's one of life's simple -- and great -- pleasures. Make sure to stop by St. Ambrose Ladies of Charity Cafe Ambrosia on the first morning of fall and enjoy a cup of coffee (and some first-class cookies!) with your friends and neighbors at Cheverly Community Market!

This stuff just gets better and better...and better! Join the St. Ambrose Men's Club and Mississippi Earl's Bayou BBQ for some excellent, authentic BBQ pulled pork and wonderful smoky ribs this Saturday starting at 10:00. We hear from the head BBQer that they're going to bring more ribs this week, so hopefully they won't sell out in an hour, but we can't promise anything, so make sure to head over early...this is just to good to miss!

This Week at the Market: Brick House Bees

Did you visit Brick House Bees at our last Market? We've been enjoying their delicious local honey on the first cappuccinos of the season, over greek yogurt, in vinaigrettes, and on peanut butter-apple sandwiches all week...so good! Music from the Market: Charles & Kelly

Our official Cheverly Community Market band, Charles & Kelly, joins us again this Saturday morning. Please gibe them a warm welcome, and remember to tip generously -- they're working all morning to make your Market experience more enjoyable!

Start your shopping, grab a pastry and a cup of coffee, take a seat at the Market tables in the center aisle, and enjoy the work of two very talented musicians, Kelly Fisher and Charles Andrews. They'll play from a wide catalog, including songs by the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, the Clash, Elvis Costello, and more. Ask nicely, and they may even play one or two of their own!

This week at the Market: Mississippi Earl's Bayou BBQ

At our last Market in August, we welcomed a very special new vendor: Mississippi Earl's Bayou BBQ, served up by the St. Ambrose Men's Club. They were, unsurprisingly, a resounding success. And there's a good reason: It. Was. So. Good. If you were fortunate enough to get a sandwich, you know. Juicy, aromatic, slow-cooked pork on a bun? Yes, please.

This Saturday, Mississippi Earl and the boys (well, men) return to the scene with those delicious sandwiches and smoked ribs! With a variety of homemade sauces -- including our favorite, a dark, spicy jalepeno-coffee number -- you can't go wrong.

Mississippi Earl's Bayou BBQ will be available from 10am to noon and to go orders are welcome.
