Thanksgiving Market: We Give Thanks for Cheverly!

We are thankful for so much at this time of year. For family, for friends. For our health, for our homes. For wonderful food and a great neighborhood. At Cheverly Community Market, we are especially thankful for our wonderful community: our long-term vendors who bring amazing things to us at every market, our occasional vendors who bring us special treats, our many volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the season (and off-season, too!), to the Town of Cheverly for continuing to support this growing concern, and to everyone who comes out and shows their support by attending, promoting and purchasing goods. Cheverly Community Market is, truly, a community endevour. We are so very grateful to all of you.

Please come visit and support your friends and extended Cheverly family this Saturday at our Thanksgiving Market. There are over 25 vendors -- friends both old and new, plus music, Green Infrastructure events, pre-orders for Christmas trees, and a raffle ($1/ticket, $5/6 tickets, proceeds go to defray start-up costs for the 2012 Market season). And, of course, a wonderful morning to spend with your family, friends, and neighbors before the hurry of the holidays really sets in.

We're looking forward to seeing you -- and sharing part of this pre-holiday weekend with you -- at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday, 9:00am to 1:00pm inside the Cheverly Community Center.

Thanksgiving Market: Cygnus Wine Cellars

"It's a blend of art and science. There's an artistic and a technical side. There are a lot of technically correct wines that are stylistically boring. You must take the science and merge it with a sense of style and artistry."
Ray Brasfield - Winemaker/Owner

We have been very eager to have Cygnus Wine Cellars with us this Market season. This small family winery, located in Manchester, Carroll County, first crushed grapes in 1995. Winemaker Ray Brasfield creates wonderful, balanced wines and consults other growers in order to promote the very best possible wine culture in the region.

Cygnus offers a full range of wines, from dry, semi-dry and sweet table wines to sparkling wines. Visit the Cygnus website for a complete list and descriptions of the wines, and a detailed description of the winemaking styles in use at Cygnus.

Visit Ray at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday. Talk to him about the wines learn about the growing tradition of spectacular Maryland wine.

Thanksgiving Market: Simply Sausage

What are your favorite things about Cheverly Community Market? One of our favorites (and admittedly, we have a lot of favorite things about Market Saturdays!) is the wonderful aromas. In the summer, passing the fruit as it warms in the sun, or the flowers and herbs in the heat...it's one of life's greatest -- and simplest -- treats. Especially wonderful aromas always emanate from the Simply Sausage tent at Cheverly Community Market. These artisanal sausages are a thing of wonder, juicy, flavorful and filled with the most amazing smells. Believe it or not, we actually know of preteen boys who, when faced with the choice between a chocolate croissant and a sausage sample, chose the sausage. Believe it.

This week, Simply Sausage will have a great variety of sausages, especially sausages that make good stuffing. Great stuffing. You are welcome.

Visit Simply Sausage this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market. Get your supplies for Thanksgiving and beyond. See you Saturday at the Market!

Thanksgiving Market: Honestly Homemade

We are so excited to have Cheverly resident and baker extraordinaire Christine Robertson join us at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday. Christine's cookies are the stuff of legend (I will attest to this) in some circles, so we're especially happy to have her on board!

This Saturday, Honestly Homemade will have  cinnamon rolls and apple dumplings for sale individually and in a multiple pack. She'll also have Triple Ginger, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Raisin, and Chocolate Chip Cookies, as well as mini loaves of banana bread and pumpkin apple bread. Finally, she'll have "Cookie Mix in a Jar", great for gift giving! All of Christine's dairy and eggs are from South Mountain Creamery and her apples will be from a local orchard.

Pick up some delicious sweet treats (and gifts) from Honestly Homemade...if they make it all the way home, you win twice. We (probably) don't have that kind of willpower!

Thanksgiving Market Community: Cheverly Green Infrastructure Event

The great community volunteers involved with the Cheverly Green Infrastructure Plan have a big event this Saturday, and Cheverly Community Market is proud to play a small part.

This Saturday, Cheverly residents may purchase  SoilSaver compost bins for only $20 (regular price up to $99.98 at Amazon & other locations). It's a great deal for you and the world around you!

The low price has been made possible by grants from the Chesapeake Bay Trust (through the Green Infrastructure Plan Committee grant), the NIE Institute, and the Town of Cheverly. Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek (FLBC) is administering the grants and the Environmental Committee of Progressive Cheverly is implementing the program. This is a comprehensive plan to encourage all residents to compost food scraps, waste paper like paper towels, napkins and tissue, and other compost-able materials to reduce Town tipping fees and improve overall waste management. Of course, you’ll also produce great compost to amend your garden, bushes and lawn. Their goal is to place 400 bins over three years... a goal that, if realized, will save the Town over $56,000 in tipping fees over the next 10 years.

Interested? Stop by and talk to Doug Alexander this Saturday at Thanksgiving Market. He can explain more about the benefits and process of composting, and get you going on a great project! And make sure to visit the Cheverly Green Infrastructure site for detailed information on all the ways that Cheverly is working to preserve, restore and sustain the natural environment of the town and surrounding areas as intact and healthy ecosystems, through a community participatory process, balancing the fulfillment of human needs and protection of the natural environment.

Thanksgiving Market: Martha's Jams

A great secret ingredient in your savory dishes. Delicious on toast on a Sunday morning. A thoughtful hostess gift. It's Market favorite Martha's Jams!

Cheverly resident Martha Allen makes these wonderful, fresh jams in her home -- there's a wide variety of flavors, both with and without sugar. Try adding a little peach or mango pulp preserves to your sweet potatoes. Brush plum jam on pork for a delicious treat. Toast some fresh bread from Cheverly Breadbasket, slather on some good peanut butter and a lashing of strawberry jam. and you'll have the best PB&J ever. Roll some blackberry preserves in crepes and sprinkle with sugar for a special brunch. Use a small bit in your thumbprint cookies this holiday. Or buy jars for your favorite teachers as a thoughtful gift, or for hostess gifts, holiday giftbaskets, or stocking stuffers for your favorite foodies. Whatever you do, preserves and jams from Martha's Jams are the ideal secret ingredient. Visit Martha this Saturday at the Thanksgiving Market and stock up!

Thanksgiving Market: GiGi's Quilts

We're always looking for special gifts and love to support local artisans. Finding a special piece -- something that really speaks to you -- is a great treat, even better if you can actually talk to the person that created it. Gisela Lombardo makes lovely quilts, table runners, placemats, bibs, bags, wall hangings and other beautifully crafted quilted goods.

Visit Gisela this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market and find something special that speaks to you.

Thanksgiving Market: Two Oceans Seafood

Stevenson, Maryland's Two Oceans Seafood has been a great resource for responsibly harvested, delicious seafood at Cheverly Community Market this season. We're very happy that they're joining us for our Thanksgiving Market!

Two Oceans Seasood comes in portions which are boned, skinned, individually vacuum sealed, and flash frozen. They're great to tuck in your freezer for the winter months ahead, and would make a lovely part of a gift basket.

We found some great recipes over on Tasteologie for salmon in a variety of preparations -- add a salmon dish to your holiday hors d'oeuvres (mmm...smoked salmon waffles from Lisa Is Cooking!). Or how about an alternative to turkey in grilled pomegranate-glazed salmon from FoodieBride? Or a wonderful brunch with an interesting take on Eggs Benedict from LostPastRemembered? There are all sorts of recipes for you to try and make your own...make sure to include Two Oceans Seafood in your very best creations!

Thanksgiving Market: St. Ambrose Ladies of Charity Common Ground Coffee

The Ladies of Charity Common Ground Coffee have been supplying us with delicious caffeine all season, and for that we are truly grateful. One of our favorite sights at the Market is full tables near the band, with everyone enjoying a hot cup of coffee and a pastry. It's really our very own Cheverly coffee house.

Plan to get to the Market early for all the Thanksgiving treats we have in store...you won't even need to make coffee before you leave the house!

See you this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market's Annual Thanksgiving Market, 9:00am-1:00pm, in the Cheverly Community Center.

Thanksgiving Market: Elk Run Vineyards

As we mentioned last week, we are very excited to welcome back some of our favorite vintners for our two annual special markets this year.

Thanksgiving Market brings us award-winning Elk Run VineyardsOne of the top wineries on the East Coast, Frederick County's Elk Run combines modern research and technology with traditions and practices of old world wine making. The result? Fine wines with character, structure, balance and good color.

Bob and Susan Cecil will bring some of their most popular wines to Cheverly this weekend -- from dry Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon  and Malbec, to slightly sweet Annapolis Sunset and Riesling, to sweet Sweet Katherine, Vin de Just Glace, Lord Baltimore Maryland Port and Sangria. You're sure to find a wine suitable for any occasion, be it a formal holiday meal or casual hangout with friends and family. And, of course, great wines are welcome. thoughtful gifts!

Make sure to visit the Elk Run Vineyards table at Thanksgiving Market this weekend. The Cecils will be happy to help you find the perfect wine.

Thanksgiving Market: Encore Hats by Nonna Barsi

Cheverly resident Ann Barsi makes wonderful hats from recycled sweaters -- Merino wool for her Performance and Commuter hats and cashmere for her Encore Cashmere line.  The sweaters are washed and semi-felted to create a slightly denser, incredibly soft fabric.

Perfect for anyone, the Performance hats are perfectly suited for the serious cyclist -- they fit under a helmet perfectly and have no thick seams, and the recycled Merino wool wicks away moisture and has natural antibacterial properties (so they don't get stinky!) These hats come in interesting color combinations and are sure to please the pickiest wearer.

The Encore Cashmere line is a luxury you can feel good about -- recycled 100% cashmere sweaters make incredibly lush, warm hats. The hats have a deep fold-back cuff and come in a beautiful array of colors from bright to subdued. Thoughtful, responsible gifts (or something very special for yourself!)

Make sure to stop by and visit Ann Barsi at Thanksgiving Market this Saturday. You'll definitely want to add an Encore Hats by Nonna Barsi hat to your cold-weather gear!

Music at the Market: William Pozo-Zarate

We are thrilled to welcome special musical guest William Pozo-Zarate to Cheverly Community Market for our annual Thanksgiving Market.

As a founding member of the group Amabolivia, he has composed and recorded a wide array of innovative music grounded in Bolivian folk tradition. This expressive music, beautiful and intricate,  "tries to send to the world the message of "Unity, Peace, Harmony and Love". We can't think of a better way to get into the holiday spirit.

Enjoy a special treat at the Market this Saturday, ad make sure to spread the word to your friends and neighbors!

Thanksgiving Market: Studio 617

We love going around Cheverly and seeing all the wonderful metal art from Baltimore's Studio 617 situated in yards all over town. It's beautiful, and we know that you're supporters of Cheverly Community Market!

This week, Holly will be bringing a wide assortment of yard art, including special holiday-themed pieces. These make great gifts for your favorite gardener or new homeowner, and a wonderful addition to your own yard. Make sure to stop by Thanksgiving Market this Saturday and visit with Holly --she'll help you find the perfect art to take home!

Food Blogs We Love: 52 Kitchen Adventures

The original premise behind 52 Kitchen Adventures was to explore one unusual ingredient each week for an entire year (that was 2010)...that's my kind of cook! Now that the year has passed, Stephanie continues to write about healthy, interesting food. Her recipes tend to be simple, healthy, and family friendly, all things we love.

Here's a great recipe for easy pumpkin butter -- a good way to use up some of those leftover pumpkins. And here's an intriguing recipe for slow-cooked pomegranate beef...I bet some beef from Waltz Family Farm would be fantastic in this one! Make sure to visit this site -- definitely worth your time!

Thanksgiving Market: Waltz Family Farm

Our friends Laurie & Jacob Waltz are with us for Thanksgiving Market, and boy, are we glad. They produce some of the best meats you can find in the area...absolutely wonderful!

The Waltzes are running a special sale...Laurie explains:

"WALTZ FAMILY FARM will be running a "fill your freezer" special at both holiday markets. Spend over $ 40.00 and we'll give you 15% off. We are presently well stocked with lamb and beef, and have a limited supply of pork. We do have some hams set aside that we'll bring November 19. At the December market we will be well-stocked with pork as well as beef and some lamb. See you soon."

Make sure to stop by the Waltz Family Farm table and stock up on roasts, stewing meats and more. Make sure to visit early -- the choicest selection usually goes early!

Volunteers Needed!

Thanksgiving Market is one of our biggest events of the year at Cheverly Community Market. With over 25 vendors and a move indoors because of the cooler weather, it takes a legion of volunteers to set up and break down this special annual event. We are grateful to everyone who makes Thanksgiving Market possible!

We need extra hands (and backs) to help with setup and breakdown this Saturday (7:30am for setup, 1:00pm for breakdown). If you can help set up tables and chairs, help vendors unload, and generally get things in order, we'd really appreciate your assistance! If you are available (and want to earn our undying gratitude) please email us. And thanks.

Thanksgiving Market: Cakes by Ruthann

We've welcomed some wonderful new vendors to Cheverly Community Market this year, and we're thrilled to continue introducing these great discoveries to our friends all season!

One of our favorite new (well, new to Cheverly Community Market -- she's well known to Cheverly people) additions this year has been Cakes by Ruthann. Ruthann and Andrea bring amazing Jamiacan-influenced savories and sweets to us, and it's wonderful that thwy'll be with us at Thanksgiving Market!

Cakes by Ruthann will have gingerbread cookies, ginger beer (non-alcholic), rum balls and beautifully decorated Jamaican rum cakes, not to mention vegetable, beef and chicken patties (turnover/empanadas). These beautifully spiced savory pies are absolutely delicious (and they smell heavenly!) Pick up a rum cake and save it for the holidays -- they get even better as the rum soaks into the cake -- great for a gift or to serve at your own table!

Make sure to stop by the Cakes by Ruthann table at Thanksgiving Market this Saturday, 9:00am to 1:00pm in the Cheverly Community Center...we'll be waiting for you!

Thanksgiving Market: Profusions of Glass

Profusions of Glass makes gorgeous fused glass art pieces . Riverdale artist Tina Van Pelt creates these in her studio, and sells at various farmer's markets and festivals in the area (see Tina's website for a complete list of dates and samples of her work).

Recently, Tina has added architectural glass to her wares, including drawer pulls and infused glass tiles that are designed to be used for backsplashes and accents. She also makes a full line of pendants, barrettes, earrings and pins.

Make sure to stop by the Profusions of Glass table at Thanksgiving Market on November 19 to meet Tina and see her beautiful work for yourself. These pieces would make lovely gifts for any occasion, so it's a wonderful opportunity to stock up on special gifts.

See you at Thanksgiving Market!

Food Blogs We Love: Post-Punk Kitchen

We know that most people focus on turkey for what could easily be described as THE food holiday of the year...turkey (just like bacon) is delicious! But there are people -- a lot of people, in fact -- that do not use animal products or try to limit their consumption. Thanksgiving can be a real challenge for them, from the "concerned" people who don't know how they can get enough protein to the family member who acts hurt that someone won't eat their turkey to the meat-laden vegetables (yep, bacon is good in just about everything).

Luckily, there are a lot of vegetarian/vegan cooking blogs these days, and they provide great, creative ideas for healthful options for omnivores and veg people alike. One of our favorites? Post-Punk Kitchen. This site has been showcasing great veg food for years, and spawned of one of the most popular veg cookbooks, Veganomicon, a great resource for any cook's library.  The site is definitely worth a visit -- you'll come away with lots of ideas for healthful veg recipes that can satisfy everyone at your holiday table.

Thanksgiving Market: Cheverly Breadbasket

We're big fans of great bread, and Cheverly Breadbasket has some of the every best bread you'll find in the DC area at Cheverly Community Market. Arvind and Crystal Lal bring truly amazing products from DC's Firehook Bakery and Hyattsville's Moctec Enterprises for really great tortillas.

Make sure to stock up on all the breads you'll need for your Thanksgiving recipes...a great stuffing demands great bread! And how about a delicious pumpkin bread pudding? Or french toast made with a hearty loaf for your overnight guests? And for those of you who can't wait for Thanksgiving for those holiday leftover turkey sandwiches (we know you're out there, roasting a turkey early, we know!), bread from Cheverly Breadbasket makes the perfect base for the best turkey sandwich you've ever had: toasted multigrain, mayo, roasted turkey, cranberries, and some fresh arugula....Thanksgiving can't come soon enough!

Visit Cheverly Breadbasket, enjoy a pastry (and treat someone you love to one while you're at it) and purchase some of the best bread you can buy. Thanksgiving Market is November 19, 9:00am-1:00pm. See you there!

Thanksgiving Market: Rose Fennell's Good Earth Pottery

A long-time supporter and vendor of Cheverly Commuity Market, artist Rose Fennell makes gorgeous functional pottery in her home studio. Rose's work is always very popular because of its beauty and spirit.

These pieces would be a gorgeous addition to a holiday table, and absolutely lovely gifts for family and friends. Visit her website to see a full range of work and start making plans to visit Rose at our Thanksgiving Market on November 19!

Food Blogs We Love: Cooks Illustrated

Cooks Illustrated is like the gold standard for recipe testing, taste testing, technical information and truly well thought out food. We've long been fans of the print magazine with its great illustrations and the ruminations of Chief Editor (and curmudgeon) Christopher Kimball, but the website makes it so easy to access expertise gathered over the years, so it's become a real go-to site.

The site has all sorts of special help for Thanksgiving, from menu and schedule planners to shopping guides to a Thanksgiving 911, but we especially like the How-To guides -- getting definitive advice on the perfect method for creating a mirepoix, removing salmon skin, kneading bread and more will really take your cooking to a higher level fast.

Thanksgiving Market: Wine at Cheverly Community Market

Cheverly Community Market has a long tradition of supporting local wineries. Did you know that we were the first farmer's market in Maryland to include wineries? We have supported new legislation that allows wineries to ship their products and we're proud to support Maryland wineries as they grow and prosper.

For our Annual Thanksgiving Market, we're pleased to welcome two Maryland wineries -- Elk Run Vineyards and Cygnus Wine Cellars. We'll profile as we draw closer to the Thanksgiving Market, but wanted to give you the opportunity to visit their websites, learn about their wines, and start making a list of the wines you're planning to buy or want to learn more about!

See you Saturday, November 19, at Cheverly Community Market's Annual Thanksgiving Market!

Thanksgiving Market: Eve's Cheese

We love Eve's Cheese. It's just that simple. These beautiful, flavorful cheeses come to us direct from the Eastern Shore -- the cows at Mason's Fawnwood Farm produce rich grade A milk just perfect for high quality cheese, and no antibiotics or chemical compounds are used to increase  milk production. Happy cows make fantastic cheese and we're happy to bring this wonderful resource to Cheverly Community Market!

Visiting family or friends this Thanksgiving? Why not offer to bring a variety of cheeses to share? If you're the host, having cheese on hand is a great idea...easy hors d'oeuvres, and a key ingredient in so many holiday recipes. Warm apple pie with a slice of Colby on top? Yes, please. And Thanksgiving leftovers? How about a turkey quesadilla with shredded turkey and some Eve's BBQ Colby? Sounds delicious!

Whatever you make, Eve's Cheese is sure to make it even more delicious! Make sure to visit them at our Thanksgiving Market on November 19!

Food Blogs We Love: Cook. Eat. Delicious.

With a multitude of creative recipes and easy ways to search for exactly what you want to make, Cook. Eat. Delicious. is a great website for easy, interesting, delicious food. From roasted garlic & potato soup to  pumpkin cheesecake, this site has great recipes to add to your Thanksgiving repertoire. And there are so many recipes for you to dive into for other meals, that you'll want to add Cook. Eat. Delicious. to your regular foodie website reading list.

Thanksgiving Market Is Coming Soon!

Have you recovered from Halloween? We donated the rest of our candy to the troops (bon voyage, mini snickers and kit kats) and we're ready to move on to our very favorite holiday of the whole year: Thanksgiving. It's a time for family and food and family and food ... our most beloved subjects and activities!

This year, let Cheverly Community Market help you to make those family and food gatherings something really special. Over the next two weeks leading up to our annual Thanksgiving Market, we'll bring you profiles on all the wonderful vendors (over 25!) that will be with us on November 19.
