Cheverly Community Market

Who's coming to Market this week?

With a record-breaking heatwave crossing the country, we know it's going to be a hot Saturday morning. Temperatures are set to hit 100f, with lots of humidity and heat indexes climbing higher and higher. Definitely sounds like summer in the DC metro area, doesn't it? Here's our suggestion: Trek out first thing in the morning and visit us at Cheverly Community Market. Get a cup of coffee or a cold ginger beer, a pastry and some fruit, and sit down with your friends and neighbors to discuss your 4th of July plans and strategies for keeping cool in excessive temperatures. Then stock up on the best fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, sausages, breads, cakes, cookies, jams, cheeses, wines and ice creams available locally, let the little ones eat ice cream for breakfast and listen to a great story at 10:30, then head home to rest and think about all the wonderful meals you can make with your treasures!

Vendors We love: Cafe Ambrosia

What's better than chatting with friends and neighbors over a coffee on a Saturday morning? Thanks to Cafe Ambrosia, run by the Ladies of Charity, Cheverly Community Market is just the place to do that! Grab a cup of coffee, pick up a pastry or some fruit, pull up a chair at our cafe tables, and enjoy music while catching up on the events of the week. It's definitely one of our favorite things about Cheverly Community Market!

Music at the Market: Charles and Kelly...and Nate!

It's been a while since we've seen our house band, Charles & Kelly, at the Market together. They've both done solo stints, but we're in for a treat Saturday morning, as drummer Nate joins them for a morning of great covers of Beatles, Grateful Dead and other favorite bands. Ask nicely, and they may even throw in an Elvis Costello or Rush song.

Show the band a warm welcome...and make sure to tip. They're working hard to entertain you and make your morning a great one!

Vendors We Love: Waltz Family Farm

Laurie and Jacob Waltz bring some of the most delicious meat we've ever tasted to Cheverly Community Market. Tender and flavorful, their animals are fed a diet of all-natural grains and raised on their Washington County farm, where the family has been farming since 1774. Obviously their doing something right! Visit Waltz Family Farm at the Market this Saturday and get delicious meats for your 4th of July grill!

Vendors We Love: Cherry Glen Goat Cheese/Palmyra Cheese

We've become a little obsessed with the amazing cheese from Cherry Glen and Palmyra Cheese. The smells, the texture, the taste... There's a good reason that local restaurants are featuring some of these prominently on their menus. Make sure to stop by the tent this Saturday and stock up -- the Chesapeake Goat Cheese is one of the most amazing things you'll ever eat!

Vendors We Love: Simple Pleasures Ice Cream

Nothing says summer like ice cream. And ice creams, sorbets, and gelati from Simple Pleasures are so good, you won't feel too guilty eating them for breakfast on a hot Saturday morning at the Market. While you're at it, stock up for National Ice Cream Soda Day, which just happens to coincide with our June 30th Market!

This Week at the Market: C and E Farms

Oh, Emma Dudley, how we've missed you! We're happy to report that C&E Farms will be back at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday!

C&E is the only surviving farm from development in Glen Dale, Maryland. Emma and her husband, C.C., both grew up on farms in North Carolina and moved to New Carrollton before outgrowing their suburban garden and rescuing a 15-acre farm in Glenn Dale in 1995. They specialize in pick-your-own ethnic produce such as callalloo, black-eyed peas, and sweet potato greens. C&E also grows herbs, beans, beets, blackberries, flowers, pears, tomatoes, walnuts and corn.

Emma is a fount of knowledge about herbs and a multitude of uses for plants. She always has beautiful produce, so make sure to stop by and find something new -- and your old favorites -- this weekend.

Wine at the Market: Basignani Winery

Since 1986, Bert and Lynne have been producing amazing wines at Basignani Winery, and we're always excited when they visit Cheverly Community Market!

Hailed by Baltimore Magazine as "Best Maryland Winery" in 2000, at Basignani, tradition is a labor of love. They use traditional methods to bottle their classically produced styles of wine. The vineyards are intentionally kept small in order to preserve old-world vinticulture and practices. Basignani bottles Chardonnay,Seyval, Cabernets, Zinfindals, Reisling, Vidals, as well as sweet wines. Make sure to stop by the Basignani tent this Saturday to find the perfect wines for your Fourth of July gatherings, or any other occasion!

Vendors We Love

Longtime Cheverly Community Market vendor Eve's Cheese makes some of the best cheeses we've ever tasted -- they've taken traditional colbys and cheddars and infused them with amazing flavors.

We're especially fond of the Chesapeake Colby, though FiFi here is a big fan of the plain cheddar (we spied her nibbling on this block cheddar after she turned down every other treat in sight. My kind of girl!)

Community Groups at the Market: American Legion Post 108

American Legion Post 108 leads a Help The Homeless Walk on Saturday, June 30, starting at Legion Park at 11:00am. The Legion has silently given support to veterans in need and appreciates the extent of the need in our communities. They have shown great leadership in supporting a community-wide Help The Homeless walk.

Let's show Cheverly in a great light! The Fannie Mae Help The Homeless Program has marked our walk for special publicity and will be taking photos to place on the national Help The Homeless website to show how Cheverly cares, gives and gathers to help those most in need in our communities. St. Ambrose and the Cheverly United Methodist Church are lending their effort to the walk and it would be wonderful to see signs and smiling faces from every organization and family in town.

Visit the Community Market to make a poster or register and then continue the community feeling by joining us at Legion Park!

This week at the Market: Shlagel Farm

Shlagel Farms has some of the most beautiful, scrumptious produce we've ever seen. Every Market, Eileen brings amazing things to us and it's always cause to remember just how good simple things can be. This week, we hit high summer produce: peaches, blackberries, blueberries, red potatoes, green beans, kale and collard greens, broccoli, cabbage, beets, turnips, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and sweet corn, as well as brown eggs. This is the good stuff, folks, so stock up! Just looking at the list, I can think of at least a dozen meals that can be made from Shlagel offerings alone...just imagine what you can do when you combine them with some cheese, a little meat or fish, some bread...my creative juices are flowing, and I bet yours are, too!

Make sure to visit the Shlagel Farm tent this Saturday and get the best ingredients for your high summer meals!

This week at the market: Simply Sausage

At Cheverly Community Market, we're always looking for new ways to celebrate food. Okay, it may be that we like a good party, and a food celebration is as good a reason as any other. But the point stands: celebrations and food go hand in hand. We're especially excited that July is National Grilling Month. And what better way to celebrate than with amazing artisanal sausages from Simply Sausage?

This Saturday, visit Stanley and the Simply Sausage crew for your grilling needs! They'll have dozens of sausages that do well on the grill. From the simple but delicious butifarra to the complex and spicy merguez or chipotle beef chorizo we have more than twenty tasty options for grilling. And they'll sample some of them on Saturday.

On a personal note, of the sausages we've sampled so far, we're big fans of the rosemary lamb and duck varieties. They're all wonderful, but these two are new to us and so especially interesting. Market Manager Liz O'Learys husband, Pat, grilled up a bunch, including barackwurst, duck, merguez, and rosemary lamb on Sunday night (when, thanks to a lack of power, grilling was the only option) and they were amazing. So many different flavors came through and it was a great treat. (If you follow us on FaceBook, you've already seen the evidence!)

Make sure to get to Simply Sausage this Saturday -- Stanley can help you pick something that's just right for your National Grilling Month celebrations...and we won't tell if you start celebrating a day early!

This Week at the Market: Classic and Carefree Bake Shoppe

Have you tried Classic & Carefree Bake Shoppe's Vegan Cookies? Truly wonderful -- delicate with a melt-in-your-mouth flavor. Kind of magic, really. Just look how happy Charles, one of our house musicians, is! Vegan and healthy baking has come a long way. My own mom, an award-winning "regular" baker who  took classes with Julia Child and Jacques Pepin, used to make some vegan hokey pucks back in the day. Now, there are amazing vegan and gluten-free baked goods f all stripes (and thankfully few hokey pucks!) If you haven't tried these innovative, healthy baking methods, we encourage you to give them a whirl. Or, make it easy on yourself and visit the experts at Classic & Carefree Bake Shoppe!

We got this note from Danielle, who tells us what Classic & Carefree will have on hand this Saturday:

"Laura is away this weekend in Peru (lucky girl!) so we will not be offering any Classic products. However, I will be there with the following -

Carefree Products: (all gluten-free)
Red, White, and Blue Cupcakes
Lemon Glaze Cupcakes
Olive and Sundried Tomato Bread
White Sandwich Bread
Regular and Vegan Cookies

Anyone planning to attend the market can also visit our facebook page for a 15% off coupon that will only be good for this week!"

This is great! Try something new this weekend at a discount, and feel good about your treats. And while you're at it, pick up some delicious gluten-free breads for the week. A veggie sandwich on olive and sundried tomato bread sounds awfully good!

Community Groups at the Market: Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek

As I write this, the sound of chainsaws and Pepco trucks fills the air. I think those are sounds we'll continue to hear for some time. I've always been conflicted about losing trees, but have come to understand that nature replenishes herself, and sometimes, she needs to make room to do it. And sometimes, nature needs a little help, too.
This week, Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek will be doing some very helpful things. Sheila Salo explains:

"Microburst got your trees? The Town of Cheverly will plant a tree on your property absolutely free of charge. Come by the Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek table and pick up an agreement form.

Visit the Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek table to learn more about the BioBlitz, coming July 7.

Do your Market shopping early and follow up with trail work with the Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek work party at 9:00am. We meet at the Cheverly Avenue entrance to the trail near Magruder Spring. Sign up at the FLBC table to make sure you get all the work party notices."

The Friends of Lower Beaverdam Creek provide a real, useful service and the organization and can certainly use your help! Make sure to stop by, visit Sheila, and learn about how you can avail yourself of Cheverly's free tree planting. It's a win-win.

This week at the Market: Benny's Fruit Stand/Rebert Farm

We are getting set for some mighty hot temperatures this weekend...by Saturday afternoon, we're expected to be near 100f! What better way to cool off than with some of summer's most flavorful, juicieist fruits? Benny's Fruit Stand/Rebert Farm will have blueberries, red and black raspberries, early peaches, and apricots -- all delicious right from the field or popped in the freezer (slices those peaches and apricots first!) and enjoyed as nature's perfect popsicles. Or drop a few pieces into a seltzer or sangria for an especially refreshing drink. You could also make a wonderful fruit salsa, a perfect accompaniment for salmon or tuna steaks. Whatever you decide to do with these treasures, make sure to stock up with the Reberts this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market!

Yard Signs This Week: A Special Message

In light of Friday's microburst and the tremendous amount of work that Public Works, Pepco, tree/debris removal companies, and others are still putting in to restore the town, we are not planning to put up Cheverly Community Market signs this week. We hope to keep as many pathways clear for the crews as possible, and ask that you only put your signs out if your yard is clean and free of debris and crews will not need to access your property. We know this is an unusual step, but we feel that we can help the crews by keeping our signage to a minimum this week.

We need your help! How can YOU help to get the word out about Cheverly Community Market this week? Please tell all your friends and neighbors! Let them know that we will be up and running this Saturday morning, 8am to noon, at the Community Center, and that we're all excited to spend a great morning together (and replenish those freezers and refrigerators with delicious local goods)! There will be extra blog and Facebook posts throughout the week, there will be extra reminders online to help spread the word.

Thank you for your continued support of Cheverly Community Market. We really do appreciate your help and hope that you all fared the storm well. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday at the Market!

Local Food and Local FarmsWell, how about Cheverly's? We hope you'll cast your vote for Cheverly Community Market in the 2012 America's Favorite Farmer's Market contest sponsored by American Farmland Trust. We came very close to winning Maryland's favorite boutique market (18-25 vendors) last year and hope we can top the list this time...but we need YOU! Please vote and share this link with your friends and neighbors between June 22 and September 3 -- share your support of the Market with everyone you know!

Thank you -- our customers, our vendors, and our amazing volunteers -- for another wonderful Saturday morning at Cheverly Community Market! We had a great time tasting the first amazing blackberries of summer, watching the dads make those birdfeeders with the kids, sampling delicious spicy ginger beer, smelling scrumptious sausages, marveling at the hula hoopers, learning more about Cheverly's future, and just generally having a terrific time. By the looks of it, you all did, too! Thank you for sharing your weekend with us.

We'll have photos up soon (wading through over 500 of them right now!) but we just wanted to extend our thanks to all of you for making this such a special community. Cheverly Community Market continues to be proud to play a part in the fabric of our town.

Our next Market is Saturday, June 30. We have lots in store for you over the next two weeks, but today, relax, cook, and enjoy your family, your community, and your weekend!

KidMarket: A Message from the KidMarket Coordinator

Here's a message from Rachel Dabney-Rice, coordinator of Cheverly Community Market's KidMarket activities:

I just wanted to make sure everyone knew the Hula Dance Class begins at 9:30am on Saturday and the Bird feeder Arts & Craft class is at 10:30am.  But I also wanted to share something I am very excited about. We've been adding classes left and right for the rest of the summer and I can't believe how it's shaping up.

As of this week we have a free Zumba class that will be offered at each market in July and August!  It'll be taught by Ronald Johnson who teaches the classes at the community center. Joe's Movement Emporium has agreed to do another dance class for us later this summer too! I am just thrilled with how many cool events we have lined up for the kids all the way to the end of October!  Pottery, Dance, Cupcake Decorating, a Petting Farm, Pumpkin Painting and even a Pet Parade. There are so many events coming for the kids it's sure to entertain them this summer. I'll keep updating as we add.

Please come out tomorrow and join us for the KidMarket events. The Hula Dance class is open to adults too!  Be sure to get to the Market early to have your coffee and pastries, then come on over for the Zumba class before 9:30 so you don't miss out on getting a hula hoop.  Then get to the KidMarket table early to insure that we'll have space for your child. We had a huge turn out last time, so earlier is better. Hope to see everyone there!

Thanks, Rachel! We're looking forward to a very energetic time for kids of all ages this Saturday at Cheverly Community Market!

This week at the Market: Waltz Family Farm

We just love it when we hear from our vendors about what they'll be bringing to Cheverly for each Market. Some are very straightforward (a list) and some very descriptive (verging on poetry). Our favorites are the prose-style entries. They really capture the personalities of the people who write them and the places they come from. Today, we share Laurie Waltz's correspondence:

image from Republic Domain
This time of year makes me want to fire up my grill ! The hard part is deciding what to cook. We have some real nice T-Bones steaks cut a little thick for great grilling and some tender juicy Delmonico steaks that make my mouth water. Or treat yourself to Lamb chops. Easy to grill, add a meat rub with dill, rosemary, garlic, S & P and a dash of cayenne if you like a little kick! We just brought back some ham steaks, cured nitrate-free, pork chops and ribs, and pork tenderloin,   they'll go fast! For a nice Sunday meal, pick up a fresh cured ham and pair it up with new red potatoes and greens. Don't forget to stock up on hot dogs as well. We have pork hot dogs stuffed with cheddar cheese, they are fat and juicy! Also have beef hot dogs that are nitrate free. These are good boiled with sauerkraut and topped with onion and peppers! Gosh, now I'm hungry!
See you on Saturday,

Laurie Waltz

We agree, Laurie. And we're hungry, too! Make sure to stop by and visit the Waltz Family Farm tent at Cheverly Community Market this Saturday. Stock up on grilling favorites, plus something special for your Sunday dinner.

This week at the Market: Cherry Glen Goat Cheese/Palmyra Cheese

We are great fans of Cherry Glen Goat Cheese and Palmyra Farm Cheese here at Cheverly Community Market, and we know that they have quite a big local following, being featured prominently on the menus of some of our favorite local restaurants. We're so lucky to have them with us at the Market each week -- we hope that you take advantage of this great treat!

This weekend, there will be three new spreads from Palmyra: Strawberry, Horseradish and Hot Pepper, as well as samples of their Chesapeake Cheddar. Think of some creative ways to use them...how about grilled pizzas or panini? Some Hot Pepper would be great with roasted red peppers and sausage, or horseradish maybe with sweet carmelized onions? Strawberry cheese spread on slices of ripe melon with a little mint chiffonade and thinly sliced strawberries? Delicious. As for that Chesapeake Cheddar...crab quesadillas is the first thing that comes to mind. Let your inner creative chef go wild!

And, lucky you, there's a sale this week on Cherry Glen Goat Cheese: buy an Ash, Silver or Chipotle and get $1.00 off your Chevre or Fresh Ricotta. These are amazing cheeses -- flavorful and complex. Lovely. The Monocacy Ash is pictured here -- great in all sorts of recipes or on its own. (We've been known to make rather decadent omelets with this one!)

Make sure to stop by the Cherry Glen/Palmyra tent this Saturday and stock up on these unique artisanal cheeses. You'll have the same great ingredients that go into some of your favorite restaurant meals!

This week at the Market: Simply Sausages

You know that wonderful aroma. It's on the breeze at every Cheverly Community Market. If you're near the Breadbasket or Cafe Ambrosia, it can envelope you and, temporarily, cloud your thinking. We've all experienced it: the siren call of Simply Sausage.

This week, Simply Sausage will offer four kinds of bratwursts. Sample them all and decide which ones you'll want on the grill this Fourth of July. and make sure to take some home for simple summer suppers, too!

This week at the Market: Martha's Jams

Mmmmm...fresh jams and preserves are one of the simple things that make life worth living. We are so lucky to have Cheverly's very own Martha Allen cooking up her delectable recipes for us at Cheverly Community Market!

Martha tells us that this Saturday, she'll add "red raspberry jam and jelly, and strawberry-red raspberry to my inventory. Also I am trying sugar-free  blueberry-apple with cinnamon and cloves. Hector loved it, so it must be good."

Cannot wait to add these treats to our pantries...and to some fresh toast! Martha's Jams. Truly a local treat!

Market Manager's Letter: June 2012

One of the best things about being a market manager is getting to talk to so many different people at the markets. Recently, I’ve had some interesting conversations about what exactly makes a farmers market. People come to a farmers market for many different reasons, some of which have nothing to do with buying produce, and every market is different. A few questions came up during these conversations which I thought  warranted further consideration.

Why is produce more expensive at a farmer's market than at the grocery store?
This is basically the concept of small scale farming/economy of scale -- if one of our producers has a deal with a grocery store it doesn't mean that we can take advantage of that same deal. The volume a farmer can sell at a market is not the same as they can with a grocery chain. We support our local farmers and want them to earn a livable wage. Sometimes this means the prices at a farmers market are slightly higher than at a grocery store. However, you are always guaranteed that your tomato or apple was picked fully ripened and as close to the market day as possible.

I really wanted some peaches from the market. Why couldn’t I find any and why is there a lack of produce in the spring?
Our producers are local. This means they are limited by the growing season of the east coast/mid Atlantic region. More specifically, this means asparagus and strawberries in May, corn and peaches will have to wait until July or August, and Asian pears and pumpkins may not arrive until fall. If you're buying bananas at a farmers market in Maryland, you are not buying locally grown food. Remember, too, our producers are subject to growing conditions, as all farmers are. Too much rain one week and a harvest may be lost. Conversely, dry conditions may mean fewer green beans. Some producers buy produce to resell to offset these losses but we feel this is not supportive of local farming.

Why are there vendors other than produce farmers at the market?
We are a community market in a food dessert. Our goal is to provide residents of Cheverly and the local community with the opportunity to purchase locally produced goods, including meats, fish, breads and other goods. One part of our mission is also to support our community. Community comes in all different shapes and sizes. While some might not agree, we at Cheverly Community Market  believe that supporting local artists is as important as supporting a local farmer.

Why are there relatively few produce vendors at the market?
We are in a unique position -- after nearly six years, we are still pretty small -- technically a boutique market -- and we're only open every other week. Eventually, we would like to grow to a weekly market, but for now we do the best we can to attract vendors that can operate within our schedule. Some of our vendors grow items that aren’t available until later in the season (or in the case of New Starts Farm, only at the beginning and the end of the season) so look for more vendors as our Market season progresses. We love our vendors and think that they provide our customers with a great selection of what’s fresh, in season, and locally available.

Why don't you do more publicity? Our friends and neighbors say they don’t even know you’re here.
We actually think we do a pretty good job! In fact, among farmer's markets, Cheverly Community Market is known for its publicity work. We operate on a shoestring budget and most of our PR is free to no cost. We rely on social media and word of mouth -- and a few yard signs -- to get the word out. We do appear in newspapers, including the farmers market listings, but we cannot control the editorial choices of the media. The best publicity is you, our customers, spreading the word to your friends and then returning to the Market!

Thanks again for your questions. We love talking with you about ways to improve the Market. Have more questions? Ideas? Find me at the Market!
Liz.

This week at the Market: Elk Run Vineyards

Celebrate Maryland Wine Week with us! Elk Run Vineyards, one of the top wineries on the East Coast, combines modern research and technology with traditions and practices of old world wine making to produce extremely fine wines with character, structure, balance, and gorgeous color. Bob and Susan Cecil look forward to returning for their sixth year at Cheverly Community Market. They've always enjoyed their involvement and appreciate the kind reception they've received from market volunteers and patrons.

This weekend, Elk Run Vineyards is featuring our dry red wines from the 2010 vintage year. 2010 was their best growing season in the past decade and arguably the best in the 32 years they've have been in operation. You're sure to find a wine suitable for any occasion, be it a formal meal or casual hangout with friends and family. Make sure to visit Bob and Susan at the Market this Saturday and let them help you find a perfect wine (or three!)

This week at the Market: Benny's Fruit Stand/Rebert Farm

It's a gray, rainy Tuesday. For many of us, it's the first Tuesday of summer break and outdoor activity plans with the kids are put on hold for the day. Kind of makes you long for a beautiful, sunny day and the lovely fragrance of summer's fruit warming in the sun, doesn't it? Well, this Saturday morning at Cheverly Community Market, you'll have the opportunity to replenish those sensory memories...just visit the Benny's Fruit Stand/Rebert Farm tent! The Reberts will have strawberries, a few cherries, black and red raspberries, and nectarines this weekend. Make sure to visit the Reberts early -- they frequently sell out and their produce is so good that it's really no surprise!

"At the risk of sounding repetitive, I'll say it again....Cheverly is such a warm welcoming community. I have more fun there than at any other market I sell at. I am so thankful that you invited me to come!"

"Our community market is as much "community" as it is "market". After purchasing beautiful, healthy, local produce, friends sit together enjoying coffee, pastry, and music with the kids happy and safe at the adjacent playground. The vendors are all local and are clearly proud of their wares, happy to answer questions about their farm or give suggestions of how to cook kohlrabi."
